"Zed, your right pocket is moving," Addison states, looking attentively at my jacket.
"That's cool!" Sebastian blurts out, leaning forward to see it move.
"It's Eliza's hand," I tell them with a shrug. An idea pops into my head suddenly....well... a piece of an idea was beginning to form. I wiggled my hip in an attempt to guide Eliza's hand out but no dice. It was zipped up.
"Eliza, mind calling your hand?" I ask her, speaking my words slowly and clearly.
Eliza rolls her head to the side toward me, trying to understand what I was saying. It gets pretty hard to understand what anyone is saying when you're in full zombie mode, words just seem to become whispers, and we're more interested in what our stomachs are saying.
"Eliza!" I call out again loudly, regaining her attention. "Hand," I say, looking down at my pocket.
Eliza growls but she is now looking at my pocket. Her hand begins to wiggle more in my pocket and I shift in my seat, trying not to start laughing at how her hand is tickling my side. Eliza's fingers pull the zipper open slowly and her fingers peek out one by one.
Eliza is looking at it and a low growl escapes from the back of her throat. Her hand starts going her way, climbing up the chair leg and onto her lap.
The door begins to open and Freddy walks inside, holding something behind his back but I can't see what it is. Behind him, the human guy, Nathan, steps inside. He is looking rather pale.
"Addison, I've given you time to rest, haven't I? Because I think it's time to start what we've already begun. Zed will probably agree." His jaw is clenched as he grins. What is he talking about?
"Agree to what?" I ask warily.
"Turning Addison into a Zombie, wouldn't that just be amazing?"
My mouth shuts quickly, my teeth grinding against each other. I can feel the calm I was trying to maintain slip away. If he touches Addison...I can't even think about that. I don't know if I would be able to hold myself back. He seems to sense the change in me, how his words have affected me and he only grins wider as a response.
"You don't want that to happen, do you?" He says with a sneer, "But it isn't your decision is it?"
"And it isn't yours either," Addison replies sharply.
He shrugs lightly, "I guess not, it's always your decision in the end." He winks at Addison.
Addison scoffs, "I find it hard to believe that my cousin chose to become a Zombie."
"Well, his hands and feet were free. It's not my fault he was too chicken to move out of the way."
"You weren't going to give me that option?"
I set my jaw, keeping my words even and cool, "If you touch her you're going to regret it."
He just smiles like I'm telling him a funny joke, "I promise I won't touch her," he says with his pinky in the air. "Oh and Addison, if you would have let me finish what I was saying earlier I would have indeed untied you, but you and Eliza make an incredible pair and she came at me before I could remove your already removed restraints. You already had the option of escape and you did make it out of the room." He takes a few steps and stands just behind Addison.
"I promised that I wouldn't touch her. I'm not touching her. I have my hands on the bindings on her wrists. I'm letting her go." He explains slowly as he does so, "Fred, go ahead." He gives a slight nod to Freddy and Freddy crosses the room, pulling a set of bolt cutters from behind his back. My eyes widen.
"You have your own decisions to make, Zed. You have the chance, no--the opportunity to be a part of something that can make our world better. The two of you have this chance." He looks at us both.
"You're forcing a couple of fifteen-year-olds to make decisions that even adults would have a problem with," Addison says with fire in her eyes.
Nathan blinks and holds his hands up, "Woah woah woah woah woah--you're fifteen?"
She nods in puzzlement, "Yes, and Sebastian is only ten."
He blinks again and his face twists in horror, "Oh god, I flirted with you. I definitely thought you were both at least 18. Sorry about that. I feel kinda gross-I'm twenty-three and now it feels really weird."
"No apologies for keeping us here maybe?" I ask, trying not to let it bother me that he had flirted with Addison.
He shakes his head curtly. "No. No apologies for that, it was necessary to keep us from being found out."
"You're going to be found out eventually. If your plan is to make everyone a Zombie it's never going to work. You can't possibly control that many Zombies." Trying to control Zombies without a Z-band was in no way possible.
"It's not about me controlling any Zombies, it's about Zombies lack of self-control. I just need a few Zombies to bite and that's all I need to get this really started."
"It's not going to work," I repeat, feeling Freddy fumbling with the chain at my wrists. What is he doing?
"You know as well as I do that we are more than prepared for any surprise Zombie attack," Addison tells him.
"Everyone has relaxed a bit on this whole Zombie problem, but this..." He waves at us, "has obviously brought them back on their toes. All we need is a few allies and we can make it."
My hand was pulled up while I was listening to Nathan. When I felt pressure on my Z-band it was already too late. My Z-band snaps off like a twig and I brace myself for the lack of control.
'Control yourself,' I think, just before my clear thoughts are pushed away somewhere deep inside my mind...
