Zed
"—But sir, I can help,——I have to help, you can't ask me to stay here!" I plead, running my hand through my hair in frustration when the Chief and my father both shake their heads.
"You are not leaving this house, son. Let them handle it." The tone of his voice makes it quite clear that nothing I say will make him say otherwise. That doesn't mean I'm not going to keep trying.
I groan, completely fed up at this point. "But I can help! If Addison is in some sort of trouble I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I stayed holed up in here!"
The chief, who had dark bags under his eyes from all the stress, only shook his head again, "I'm sorry, Zed, I know you want to help, but I can't allow it. Not only are you too young, but you're hurt and I can't have you out there looking for her...I don't want this to get out, I don't want to make a fuzz when both of the girls could just be hanging out."
It was safe to say that neither of them was going to change their minds. I closed my eyes and pinched the bridge of my nose, regretting it instantly when I remembered it was bruised, "Okay, I understand." I said tightly.
My dad looked pleased with my answer.
"Please, if either one of you gets in contact with one of the girls you tell me immediately."
"Of course we will, Dale." My dad says while I nod. The chief gives us both a grateful nod before disappearing out of the door.
"I'm hoping those two haven't gotten themselves into any trouble, lord knows that they're two of the most stubborn girls we know."
"That's why I wanted to go out there and help find them; if Addison convinced Eliza into investigating into this whole thing the two of them could get in real trouble!"
Everything hurts but just thinking about Addison in trouble makes me forget it all. If I wasn't able to change her mind I should have at least stood by her side, I should have been with her. I'm still holding onto the small fraction of hope that she just decided to go with Eliza to find these people and just lost track of time.
"Son, I know you feel helpless having to stay here but it's for the best. You're already hurt as it is, just stay and try at least to regain some health." He tells me, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder.
"I don't care about my health when my girlfriend and best friend could be in trouble."
My dad looks me straight in the eye, "You've been able to stay calm when you heard about Bonzo, can you try to do the same here?"
I sigh in irritation, "I can't, Dad, just look at what they did to officer Heins, this isn't some silly harmless rebellion, this is real, with real consequences. My friends, my girlfriend, can get hurt. I can't have that."
"You're staying here and that's final."
I pressed both of my hands over my eyes and grumble under my breath.
"Now please go up to your room and rest." He points at the stairs waiting for me to go. I rub my temples and nod, turning away from him to go up the stairs.
I'm not letting my friends get hurt.
...
As I look out of my window I can't help but ask myself: How in the world did Addison manage to get up? There doesn't seem to be many places to grab onto that I'm able to see from up here, and there wasn't any way that the makeshift door overhand was able to be stepped on without making loud noises—or breaking off entirely. I shouldn't be surprised that she made it up here but I still am, she's just incredible.
