Killian opened the door and froze.
He saw Emma Swan in a hospital bed, unconscious. She was pale, messy, and seemed lifeless. She was truly unrecognizable. He still knew it was her.
Killian slowly went over to her and sat down in a chair by her bed. There were many flowers and cards and other get well objects people brought in for her. He could only focus on her.
He slowly took her hand into his. He couldn't even come up with words. His mind had suddenly become blank.
He didn't know what to do, say, or think. All he knew was Emma was alive, for now at least. She was here.
A doctor walked in soon after. "Um, hi," Killian said, standing up. "How is she?" He asked.
He didn't know if he truly wanted that answer. She didn't seem to be too well at the moment. He was concerned for her.
"She seems to be doing okay. She's unconscious for now, but it's only temporary. Hopefully when she wakes up she'll give us more information. We don't really know what's wrong with her," The doctor answered.
"Thanks," Killian said. He was relieved. She was going to be okay, it was all going to be okay soon. At least, that's what he repeated to himself.
Soon enough it would just be a memory. If all went well, Emma would be back again. She'd laugh and talk to him and brighten the world once more.
The doctor left and Emma laid still in her bed. She didn't look peaceful, but she didn't look disturbed. She was somewhere in between the two.
Killian sat down next to her again and sighed.
"Hey, Emma," He said simply, just as he did two years ago when she sat next to him on the stairs.
For a split second he wanted to pretend nothing had happened. He wanted to act as if she hadn't been gone for two years. That the last two years had been filled with conversation, and new memories instead of sadness and loneliness. He didn't make new memories with her, he just relived the old ones.
The harsh reality would just hit him harder when she woke up. That is, if she ever did. The doctor had told him she was okay and she'd wake up soon but he didn't know how much he could believe. He knew they were trying, of course, but he didn't know what could and couldn't be fixed. He had no idea what Emma had gone through.
Who knows if she'd ever be okay again. Who knows what she experienced for the past two years. The doctors have already lied to him enough about other things, he can't trust them now.
He sat in silence for a moment, contemplating his next words. Not that it truly mattered. She couldn't hear him. Although he did read somewhere that people could hear.
"Oh, God. I've missed you," He said, in a half broken voice. "I've missed you so much, Swan."
He sighed softly, wishing she would say something. Do something. He wished he could help her in her helpless state.
He wished she'd tell him it's going to be okay. Tell him she's okay. Tell him anything.
However, his wishes weren't granted. Emma laid there still. "I really hope you're okay. I missed you so much and I need you here," He said.
"A lot has gone on since you've been away. You've probably heard it already, seeming as how the whole town has been in here. We had a memorial for you at school. A lot of people missed you. Your locker is all nice and decorated. So, that'll be fun when you get back. I don't think you'll have to rerun for student government either. The school will probably just let you back on.
You can go to English again. It's gotten really boring for me. That whole Shakespeare thing isn't really to my liking. It's just a bunch of weird sob stories between thirteen years olds. You've always liked it though, so I'm sure you still will. History has been good, too. You'll really love our teacher. He's so fun to be around and he's really stubborn. He can be really funny and he's so sarcastic. We also have a ton of electives you can take. You might like photography, you'd get to take pictures of nature. You go on a few class trips in the woods and stuff too. I take criminal justice and law. Yeah, for you... We're learning a lot. You would like it a hundred times better than I would. I do like it though, it's not bad. It reminds me of you.
Oh, and before you ask, music has been going good. I've learned a few songs by heart. I think you'll appreciate that I learned Hold On, by Shawn Mendes. I'll play it for you when you wake up if you'd like me to. I'm still not great at it though. The new music teacher is good but I don't really get popular material.
I'm sorry I didn't take your advice. I'm still the nobody around school. I still sit on the stairs during lunch and I still don't talk to anyone. Except Robin Locksley. He talks to me sometimes, but I don't know if he really wants to.
Ruby has taken it pretty hard, you know, with you being gone and everything. She missed you a lot. Everyone has. We all love you. Please get better... For all of us."
He sighed and whispered, "Come back to me." Then he took her hand and brought it up his lips to kiss it ever so gently.
"See you later Swan," he said quietly.
Then he got up and left the hospital. He walked through the rain to get to his house.
Little did he know that soon after he closed her hospital door there was a faint beeping sound coming from her heart monitor. A few moments later Emma jolted awake.
