It was a Saturday morning, November 8th, when Killian was watching TV. He switched to the news to find breaking news flashing across the screen.
Breaking News: Young girl, blonde, found behind a tree in the forest. More information to come.
As he read the words his heart pounded in his chest. Could it be Emma? He figured blonde was vague, so it could be anyone. How many people could be missing, though? His mind argued against itself until more information came. His pure hope and wishes overpowered his logic.
By now, the whole town was crowded around their television, with rumors buzzing around.
The news reporter came on screen. "The victim is unconscious and still too messy to identify," They informed. The words faded out of his focus when the screen showed a body being put into the ambulance. All he could see was the messy blonde hair, but Killian had a feeling. A simple gut feeling that it was Emma. He just knew it was. It had to be.
He turned off the tv and paced around his room. He constantly checked his phone to see if there was any more information.
Killian couldn't take it anymore. He ran to the hospital. He had to see. He had to see if it was her. He had to know if she was okay.
Killian went to the front desk and checked to see if Emma was there yet.
"Um, there was a girl in here a few minutes ago," She said. "You can't go into her room though.''
"Why not?'' he questioned. Killian really wanted to see her.
"She's a bit of a Jane Doe right now," The lady answered. "No one knows who she is, and no one knows how she got there. There is no information."
"She's not Jane Doe! She's Emma Swan," Killian told her, a little too aggressively.
"Okay... How do you know Emma?" She asked him.
"She's my friend. We went to school together. We always talked," he told her.
The woman simply nodded. "Okay, you can go in there when she's feeling a little better," She told him.
"Thank you," he said, as he sat down in the waiting room chair.
Countless hours passed. It seemed like an eternity of waiting.
He saw people come and go, most of them had the same idea as him. They all wanted to check on the 'Jane Doe'.
A lot of them were waiting for Emma. The waiting room got pretty full. People were nervously talking and spreading rumors.
"What if it's that Swan girl that went missing a few years back?" He heard a voice say.
"I wonder who committed the crime." Someone else thought aloud.
"I wonder why she's just turning up now, after all this time," Another voice said.
When the nurse came out of her room, everyone froze. All eyes were on her. Anxiously waiting for words.
"Family of Emma Swan?" She called out. A man and a woman stood up. They were middle aged, the man with brown hair, and the woman with a black pixie cut.
Everyone watched them, as they disappeared into the room.
Silence surrounded the room. Everyone was trying to figure out what was going on.
Emma's parents had come out of the room, with expressionless faces.
'Was she okay? Was it even her? Why aren't they happier?' Killian thought.
The questions circled everyone's minds as her parents walked out silently.
"Um, people can come in now. One at a time, please," The nurse announced. Now, the real dilemma was the order people went in.
It took every inch of Killian's being not to just run right into that room. He remained seated.
Everyone sat for a short while, until Ruby finally got up and went into the room.
A few minutes, which seemed like days, passed. Ruby came out, the same as Emma's parents had. Expressionless; silent.
She walked out of the hospital and drove away.
What could possibly be wrong? Is Emma okay? What is going on?
As he had time to think, many thoughts came about. Was this just a cruel joke someone was playing?
He watched person after person enter Emma's room. One by one, her whole lunch table went in.
August Booth went in, Emma's guy best friend. Regina Mills went in, Emma's friend. Then Regina's sister, Zelena Mills.
Person after person disappeared into Emma's room.
Each came out the same as the last.
Then, each would get into their car, and leave. Without a single word. The wait was tortuous. After a while Killian was the only one left. He really didn't want to go anymore. He couldn't be disappointed.
Although he had to see her. He had to. Killian hadn't seen her since sophomore year. Two years of believing she was dead. Believing she was gone forever.
'How can I do this to myself now? How can I bring myself to the near end of insanity, waiting to see her?' he thought. 'What was I going to say to her? We haven't spoken in two years. I haven't seen her for two years.'
He couldn't even imagine what happened. What if her beautiful smile had dimmed? What if the laugh he loved so much would never appear again? What if her amazing heart had been crushed? What if her open mind had been closed? What if her personality had been destroyed? What happened to her?
A battle between the past and future. What if she's changed? What if she's not the same kind soul everyone once knew? What if he was setting himself up for disappointment? What if she wasn't the person he knew two years before?
Doubt after doubt rolled into his mind. He had to see her though. Killian couldn't possibly wait another second.
He stood up and walked to her room. Slowly, for sure. Incredibly slow.
Somehow getting past all the shaking, he knocked on the door. Once, twice, then another time again. He waited for a response.
It probably didn't take her long to respond, he just couldn't hear it. His heard was pounding. His mind was filled with a million thoughts. He opened the door and walked in.
Then, he froze.
