Myra P.O.V
After the battle, I completely shut down. Within one fight, I had lost my husband and nephews. Now, I would be ruling a vast kingdom alone, amongst people who never knew me and hated me. The thing that hurt the most was the baby. I never wanted my child to grow up like I did: one parent taken away too soon. But, here I was reliving my childhood all over again. I never knew how my mother could have been so strong to raise three kids on her own. As a child, I could always tell that we, especially the twins, made her sad. We were constant reminders of the family that she had lost. I didn't want my child to feel that but couldn't help but harbour a tiny amount of gloominess.
Thankfully, I had plenty of help. The company would always have my back and I was extremely grateful for that. I formally made all of them my child's uncles so that it could grow amongst family. I was also thinking about its safety. I needed family close by in case anything happened to me. I trusted all of them with my life the moment we started the quest and had no hesitation with my child's. They were all eager to be uncles and happily agreed to become guardians if the worst should happen. Bilbo was so very young and I felt bad for making him possibly responsible for a child. But, he profusely assured me that it was no bother and would love too. Gandalf accepted the title of grandfather without a second thought. I knew that he couldn't wait to teach the little one magic and get it into all sorts of trouble.
Dain had been very accepting of me. He was a helpful ally as I solidified my rule. Most of the dwarvish families resented my claim on the throne. Dain was quick to silence anyone who tried to question my pregnancy. Nearly all of them accepted my rule when my story was corroborated. Deep within the archives, Dain and Balin found an old scroll. The deed listed myself, my mother and younger siblings as official members of the royal family. It also stated that jewelry like a bead was valid proof as well. With grandpa Dain and uncle Thror signatures, my claim was irrefutable. They quickly fell in line with this news.
Bard helped his people settle into Dale, where Bilbo planted his acorn. He wanted to give them a gift after everything we put them through. The people quickly made him their King. He ruled over Dale as well as Laketown. I made sure that he got reparations and gave him some men to help rebuild. Of course, he sent some men to us to help with our rebuilding. He would visit often to check on his people and give me company. We quickly became friends which was inevitable. It was beginning to look like the old days when men and dwarves work together.
Thranduil surprised me the most. After the battle, he became much kinder to me. He no longer insulted my choices openly. While he still bitterly resented the dwarves, he kept his tongue while visiting. Soon after the fight, I gave him back his wife's jewels: the white Gems of Lasgalen. He was thankful and offered their return as a fresh start between us. I nervously accepted due to the sincerity of his plea. However, the terror that he had instilled in me could never be easily removed. Yet, I was willing to try since the centuries of rivalry was draining.
Bilbo and Gandalf stayed behind a bit. They wanted to make sure that I was okay. Honestly, I wasn't but appreciated having my friends nearby. It was soothing to talk to them and release my pent-up anger. They helped keep me calm and collected during the aftermath of the fight. From their counsel, I had Dain arrange the funeral. Given my emotional state, I would be incapable of performing it. Dain agreed to without hesitation.
~ a few days ~
Today was finally the funeral, after a couple days of non-stop work. The tombs for Thorin, Kili and Fili were finally ready. The guests were already here. I was dreading having to talk to Thorin's sister Dis. I hoped that she didn't blame me for her family's deaths. Dale had basic necessities so Bard and his people left yesterday to settle in. Thranduil took his army home a day after the battle once they were fit for travel.
Thorin, Kili and Fili were already on their slabs. The horn from Dale would signal us to start, as was the custom. However, I made one small adjustment to the service. The newly crowned ruler would normally sit in the rafters above the tombs. Dain would take my place as I would stay on the floor to give my final goodbye.
My people had slowly begun to come to the mountain once word of our victory spread. 1/3 of my people were currently in Erebor. The others would come soon, thankfully we had plenty of room for both races. Everyone was ecstatic to return since they had either grown up or raised their families here. My handmaidens helped dress me for the funeral. In place of my circlet, I was wearing Thorin's crown and would whenever in dwarf lands. Per our custom, I wore a veil underneath my crown. However, mourning veils covered the entire face, making them a bit longer. My jewelry were my wedding ring, necklace, an earing and family ring. My hair was looped into a braid which ended in a bun with a few loose strands; making me comfortable and royal. Once I was dressed, I headed for the tombs.
I stood next to Bilbo along with the company, Gandalf, Radaghast and Beorn in a line. The horn of dale echoed through the chamber. With that, we could begin paying our respects. Kili was placed first then Thorin and Fili on the far end. Everyone began to slowly walk around the tomb, kneeling and crying a bit. The three of them held their weapons in their hands, except for Thorin. His sword was next to him while the Arkenstone was held in his hands.
Everyone was extremely emotional. Balin cried when he saw Kili and Fili. They were both too young to have died. But, no one was prepared for Thorin. A man who died as he lived: fighting for his people. I gave Kili a small smile before kissing him on his head. Before I left, I placed his runestone back in his pocket, per Tauriel's wishes. The next person was Thorin. Bilbo let me see him first as the others waited or had already said goodbye.
"Thorin, I never got to tell you this so I suppose I should now. Although it seemed like I lost faith by shutting you out and ignoring you, I never did. I was angry at myself for allowing you fall ill in the beginning. I was so frustrated at my inability to help you. But now I realise that you can't rush somethings. I suppose we both realised something too late." I confesed as I began to cry. "You stubborn, foolish, annoying dwarf. I will always love you for teaching me to be more patient and a smidge more selfish. Post hi wí Elbereth. Lothron hain gíd cin na penil tiera, nin onlui mel." (Rest now with Elbereth. May they guide you to peaceful lands, my only love.) I finished before kissing him one last time.
Bilbo followed behind me and began crying instantly. I quickly held back my own tears before returning to him. I held him in my arms as her cried into my dress. We didn't move for a while as he let out all of his emotions. After a while, he was composed and we went to Fili. I gave him a kiss on the head before placing a white orchid in his hand. It was a tradition for us to bury the dead with white flowers as a sign of our eternal life in Aman, where we would be reunited. I had done the same with everyone else.
We were the last to complete the path. Bilbo stood next to me as I stood at the base of the steps. The company faced me with their hands on their weapons. Gandalf began his speech to conclude the service.
"The king has come unto his own, under mountain, under stone. Send him now, unto the deep unto earth's, eternal sleep, under mountain, under stone through all the lands, let it be known. The king is dead!" Gandalf said as Radaghast and Beorn looked on
"Long live the Queen!" Balin shouted as he raised his weapon in my direction. The others and the rest of the dwarves followed suit as I humbly bowed. I was officially Queen under the Mountain, the most powerful person amongst the dwarves. Though, it would be a lonely rule without my king.
