chapter nineteen

Amanda

"Come on, Alexa! We need to leave now!" I yelled down the hall of our apartment. We were running late yet again because Lexi wasn't moving very quickly this morning. I wasn't breastfeeding all the time any more as I was trying to wean Theo completely from me. I had him down to two feeds from my breasts a day, once at night before he went to sleep and then once in the morning when he woke up.

"I'm coming, Mummy!" Lexi replied. She came running down the hall with her backpack smacking her little back. "I'm ready to go!"

"Let's go then!" I responded. I turned my car on in the apartment and I grabbed Theo in his car seat. We left the apartment with me wishing that there was some way for me to get Lexi ready quicker but the only way that was going to happen was if I moved in with Alesha but her apartment was just as small as mine was.

I got Lexi dropped off with only a few minutes to spare. Alesha had been in the bathroom when I had come into the classroom. She had been getting sick with morning sickness more frequently and some of the parents were beginning to wonder if Alesha was pregnant. She wasn't ready yet to say that she was pregnant with twins or that she was in a relationship with me.

I was almost late to work with a minute to spare before I would technically be late. Simon didn't mind it if I was late to work because of my children or if I brought Theo with me. I didn't bring him to a daycare because there was one in Simon's record company building.

I brought Theo to his daycare and sat down at my desk a few minutes late. I had never liked being late but I had become accustomed to it by now because of my children. Simon knew I was always going to be late in some way or another in the morning since I had children.

Simon didn't have children yet but he was dating David. They had gone on a couple of successful dates and had decided to make it official that they were dating. Alesha and I were happy that they hit it off as we had set them up to go on their first date. They were now sometimes doing double dates with Alesha and I when we went on dates.

Simon was a complete softy and he loved children so it meant that if I had to take a day off to care for a child if they were sick, he would let me work from home and pay me a little extra that day. I was supporting myself and Lexi since I had been twenty and supporting three people including me since I had been twenty five. I had gotten used to be on my own and the paychecks I received from Simon helped along with the baby sitting he did for me.

I turned my computer on and checked my email. I had two new emails from Simon about two artists coming to his office today and I replied to them saying that I remembered. If Simon didn't send an email to me, he wouldn't remember half of the stuff that went on in the record company. Simon was forgetful and some people took advantage of that when they were talking to him, months in between their conversations.

I looked at who was coming in and it was someone new, Demi Lovato. She was originally from Dallas, Texas in America and had originally made her appointment with Simon when he had been in America last week. She flew back with him and was meeting with him today. Simon had just signed her the previous week and wanted to talk to her about releasing a debut single. Simon had told me about Demi because he liked her voice and her feisty personality.

I reminded him of what he was going to talk about with Demi in an email. I looked at who else was coming in. Simon had a lawyer coming in from one of his artists to talk about song rights and the lawyer wasn't here yet. I still had five minutes before the lawyer was supposed to show up so I put my hair up into a bun for the busy day I was going to have.

I was finally done with work as Simon always let me leave half an hour before school got out so I could pick Lexi up and bring her to the office. Lexi loved Simon like crazy and they always caused trouble with each other. They pulled pranks on me as they were thicker than two theives. If I hadn't known better, I would have thought that Simon was Lexi's birth father.

I met Alesha in her classroom and I was the last parent to pick up their child.

"Hey," I said, catching her attention. "Anymore morning sickness since I left you with Lexi?"

"Loads," Alesha replied. "I'm tired of having morning sickness. I wish I had a repeat of Azura's pregnancy. That one was so easy compared to this one." Alesha was sitting at her desk and she had on a tight fitting shirt so her baby bump was on display.

Lexi came up to me and she hugged me. I hugged her back and she went back to playing with the dollhouse.

"Drink ginger tea. That's what helped me though morning sickness with both of my pregnancies," I suggested.

"I'll have to try that then. What else did you do when you had morning sickness, Amanda?" Alesha asked me.

"Pregnancy lollipops. They're real and don't look at me like that. Look them up if you don't believe me and I had a lot of ginger drops," I offered. Alesha opened her laptop and she started looking up the first thing I had suggested to her, the pregnancy lollipops.
