Alex wasn’t sure how far he ran? He just remembered hearing Bradley’s voice in his head

Begging him to stop and come back. Emma needed him. What?

How could it be? He was sure he had felt her die. He turned and ran back towards the house. He shifted back finding a pair of shorts at the edge of the forest and tugged them on. Everyone took notice as he mounted the steps and entered the house. Everyone now knew that Emma was his mate. He made it to Emma’s room in no time and he walked in surprised to see his father and Bradley there. Emma looked like death but the rise and fall of her chest put him at ease. “Alex?”

“He turned to see the doc watching him. His shirt was stained with blood, her blood.

“The baby….”

It was the first time Alex noticed the bundle in his hands. Alex walked over and took the bundle from him. Pulling back the blanket he let a single tear fall as he took in the tiny body of a baby boy. “I’m sorry Alex but he didn’t make it.”

He only nodded letting the doctor’s words sink in. He handed the baby back and said,

“Leave.” His word came out like a whisper but everyone heard. His father, the doctor and Bradley nodded to him before leaving the room. He sat down next to Emma and took her hand. He kissed it. She didn’t even stir. It didn’t seem like enough just holding her hand. He careful got into the bed with her. He kissed her lips feeling energy surge through him. He wondered if she felt it too. Soon he drifted off to the sound of her labored breathing.

Alex POV

Alex stood by the window taking in the young pack members in training. He was deep in thought about a lot of things, mainly his mate. It had been two weeks and Emma had yet to awaken. He was scared out of his mind and even though the doctor promised him a complete recovery, he also knew it would take time. “She’s a human.”

He still remembers the doctor’s words to him. “Her body couldn’t sustain a wolf baby. Her body didn’t handle strain of carrying such a powerful being. The doctor had performed an emergency C-section but it was too late.”

That was exactly what happened. Her body had rejected the baby. It would have been a boy. He shook the images from his head. Then so be it. He would just do without kids if it meant keeping her safe. He almost laughed at that thought. Just months before he had wanted nothing but children and now something meant more to him than that. Emma meant more than his own life.

“Alex?” he turned to see his father walking into the room. Concern clouded his eyes.

“Yes father?”

“You do realize that you missed your meeting with Alpha Sheridan?”

 Alex frowned. “Damn.”

“No worry, I rescheduled for you.”
