Emma wasn’t sure how long she stayed there next to the wolf with eyes like hers. She didn’t venture from her spot to explore the world she was in. She didn’t want to get lost here because here felt like nowhere at all. She would just wait for Alex to find her.

“Emma?” She almost didn’t look around for fear she was just imagining things but curiosity got the best of her. She turned to see Alex strolling towards her. He smiled making her heart swell. He had a black wolf with him and she could see it had eyes like his. “That’s your wolf.”

He looked at it and nodded. “Yeah and I see you’ve met yours. She’s beautiful Emma.”

The wolf seemed to raise her head to this but then she rested on her paws with a bored expression. Alex’s wolf walked over to her wolf and lay beside her.

“My wolf seems a little sad don’t you think….wait? Am I like you now or am I dreaming?”

Alex nodded. “This isn’t a dream Em. It’s a place where you go to heal. We all have a place like this.” She noticed that he hadn’t moved to touch her yet.

“Am I dying?”

He chuckled. “I assure you Emma, you are alive and so is the baby.”

She touched her stomach that was now bigger. She saw him clenching his hands at his side.

“You seem angry?”

“I’m not. It’s just that seeing you pregnant doesn’t exactly put my fears to rest.”

“Why do you keep thinking of a grim out come? This could actually work.”

“It didn’t work for my mom.”

“What do you mean?” Emma had never asked about his mom before. He would mentioned her briefly but never elaborated.

“My mom was a human Em. Her and my father met when she was just nineteen. They fell deep in love much like you and I are. He changed her on her twentieth birthday. After that they were even more in love. She was strong yet caring, graceful and wonderful. Within two years of their marriage she became pregnant with me and Paul. It was easy for her body had long become accustom with the wolf that was within her. That was why it came as a shock when the pregnancy took a turn for the worst. When my dad told me this story he said he would never forget the pain she went through. It was so unbearable that they considered killing me and my brother. She had told him that she couldn’t bare losing her babies and that she would give her life for ours.” He looked down at his hands that were shaking. “So she did. I think that after my dad told me this I wanted him to hate me and my brother. I couldn’t understand how he couldn’t. He tells me often that every she wolf is different, every life is forever changing. I’m holding on to those words and praying you’ll be okay in the end.”

She moved towards him wanting to hold him but he stepped back.

“I can’t touch you. If I do it may cause you to wake up and you’re not healed yet. It would hurt like hell.”

She recalled her bones breaking and the unbearable pain. “So are you going to stay with me?”

“As long as I can.”

“What shall we do then?”

“We should sleep.” He looked over to their wolves. Both were asleep. Emma settled back on the snow. Alex just sat before her. “Sleep now Emma and when you awake you’ll be back with me.” Emma felt her eyes droop and she didn’t fight it.

“Emma open your eyes.”The command was so strong how could she not obey. Her eyes snapped open on their own accord. Alex smiled down at her. “How do you feel?”
