Aunt Sis was there .. her husband, another Uncle Jimmy
more cousins .. Dewayne .. Donna Gail .. Dennis .. David
another cousin named Debbie .. also cousins John Ed .. Larry
Uncle Edward .. Aunt Katie .. they'd all arrived from Winnie, Texas
and a small farming community named Bastrop, Louisiana
then Aunt Myrl .. Uncle Max
cousins Max Raymond .. Joe Earl .. Sherrie Lynn
a rather large family .. i'd have to say
mom .. her sisters, Sis .. Edna .. Myrl
would sneak away to the Cottonport Lounge
while the men barbequed .. drank whiskey .. beer
Saturday evening .. it was getting late in the day
i'd hear one uncle ask another uncle
where are our wives? .. then hell would start
Aunt Edna's husband .. Uncle Jimmy would say
I know exactly where the hell they're at
he'd leave the barbeque burning on the grill
hop fast into his car .. stepdad Arlis too
vroom .. off they went to the Cottonport Lounge
i'll never forget Uncle Jimmy's red, angry face
cursing about how he'd taken the weekend off
to spend some rare time with Aunt Edna
about an hour later .. rubber squealing
boom .. slam .. we knew they'd arrived
mom .. all my aunts, drunk .. laughing wild
Arlis had to drive them back .. pantyhose thrown on his head
all my uncles pulled in behind them in the narrow driveway
so they're all about looped .. except Arlis
he hardly ever drank .. not much when he did
while they were busy arguing
us kids would take .. hide the liquor
hoping somehow they'd give it up
fat chance .. a pipe dream
they'd only stagger to a car .. go on a beer run
but not before arguing about who would go
it was always like .. whoever had to go was a loser
snorting .. burning rubber leaving .. flipping the bird
I went into the house to use the restroom
confusion .. screaming seemed to be coming
from every large room in the two story house
grandma Eva had caught Vernon flirtring again
she'd poured a hot skillet of cooking oil on him
it was hell I tell you .. pure hell to pay
