nights i'd hear strange goings on
never knew what was happening
muffled noises .. sometimes screams
would echo .. merging with high tides
I stayed locked up in my car .. quiet
pistol in my hand while i'd fall asleep
fast forward .. sixteen years
i'm home .. listening to the news
twenty six male bodies discovered
buried in deep sand along the coast
where i'd slept in my car for awhile that year
flashback .. i'm strolling along the coast
I meet a cool hippie and his wife
they've constructed a rare work of art
a driftwood house held together by chickenwire
it was amazing just to view .. awesome it was
I felt compelled to ask them
what they'd do with it once they'd leave
they related they'd dismantle .. roll it up
take it with them .. summer art project
show and tell at school .. they're teachers
meanwhile I continue walking along the coastline
spend all day alone .. at the end of a distant pier
sun begin setting .. i'd walk back to my car
gather with a crowd of onlookers
it had become a daily habit .. a ritual
we'd observe sharks .. schools of them
later I discovered they were on the news
that's just how many sharks there were
brushing my teeth .. washing my face
bathing ankle deep in saltwater was no party
yet I managed to make it through it all somehow
flashback .. night after i'd moved out of the commune
I was standing beside my saltwater damaged car
near the gulf's edge there was a bonfire
heading over to join the crowd of freaks
I was confronted by a few of winnie's ex-cons
they'd found out I was living on high island beach
I recognized the largest junkie thug
donald .. he'd shotgun pellets in his face
from a time he was almost blown away
two other ex-cons .. I knew not their names
donald related they'd come to kill me
if I wouldn't agree to stop seeing alline
