aurora

Their hands fidgeted, fingers conjoining in different and unexplainable ways. each one a distinctive expression, perhaps with a story. "would you like to speak?" the man questioned. his mouth forming in a simplistic and optimistic grin.

"yeah, my name is aurora lune. i'm not really interesting and i don't go out that much. but i love art and you know those memes with the heart emojis surrounding the photo?" i pause, looking off into nothing, "i love those, they are just so cute!"

"um, aurora, the real reason." my smile twitched slightly in a firm line of the lose of humor.

"my name is aurora lune and i'm an alcoholic who is only two days clean from self harm." the room was silent as before. everyone's eyes hitching to mine. i couldn't bare to gape at anyone.

we were all here for the same reason. i had nothing to be ashamed of but the taste of those words leaving my tongue to their ears was utterly terrifying.

the seconds i stared at my hand i was able to glance up. a slight, sad, simper pasted on my lips. "and how does that make you feel?"

"what do you mean how does that make me feel? do you want me to say it's sensational?" it was a question however it sounded more like a statement as it escaped my mouth for the 'counselor' to process.

that's when from the farthest corner a laugh was created. a perfectly, hearty, fit of chuckles fled from the man's voice. his eyes crinkling in the most admirable way possible.

"ms. lune, i don't believe now is the time for humor," he slowly responded now turning his neck to lock eyes with the man's figure. it made me smile. "and mr. dolan can we control the laughter."

"it's just aurora."

"my apologies. but i would still like a serious answer aurora."

"if your question isn't serious to myself, i won't answer it." i declared.

"i think it's a pretty significant question-" i laughed.

"but it's not. we are all because we are sad people. there is something mentally wrong with us. asking me how i feel about craving alcohol and hurting my damn self purposely and loving it is predictable. i am not happy about it, so don't ask me that question." his face was empty. empty in a way, where i couldn't read its meanings and yet i know the outcome of what he would say when his eyes spoke of nothing.

i gazed at the boy who chuckled. He was finally someone i could understand without words. he was alone as he stared into nothing and nodded.

"well perhaps that is something we should all think about until next week." people shot up from their seats. including the counselor. the only ones left were the boy who laughed loudly and the girl who spoke truthfully that sat across from him, myself.

it felt like hours we gazed at one another. but it was minutes until he got up then only to sit beside me.

"im grayson." he uttered. "you're extremely funny."

i smiled before adding to his commenting, "am i really because all of two friends call it dark humor." i looked away for a moment only to fiddle with my fingers. the chipped nail polish standing out. "and i know who you are, you go to the high school next to mine."

"oh okay, well what high school do you go to now?" i studied his lips, the locks of mahogany hair sitting perfectly on that pretty little head.

"i go to Paramount high school." i say.

"well lucky for you my brother and i are actually transferring there." i smile, the way his eyes light up muddled me on the real reason why he was in a place for such dejected people.

"does that really make me lucky?"

"i like you." he announced before standing up and taking a pen after scavenging through his pocket and scribbling numbers on my hand. "that's my number. call me whenever you like just not on sundays."

"why not sundays?"

"they are always bad days."
