Jay Wing and Hawk sat at the cliff, watching the sun rise.
They had stayed in the forest all night because nobody came looking for them.
"So, what's being a cave dweller like?" Jay Wing asked.
"I'm always alone, everyone gives me mean looks, my friends are 10 years older than I am and they do illegal things, I feel worthless, Jay Wing. I feel like I don't matter."
Jay Wing sighed as Hawk rested his head on Jay Wing's shoulder. "And I don't. I'm not more important than anyone. I'm not special. I'm just fucking stupid. I'm shit, Jay Wing. Shit."
Jay Wing looked Hawk in the eyes. "No. None of that is true. I've never met anyone as special as you are, Hawk. Do you know what Gwennie has been doing? Lying about how you abuse and attack her!"
Hawk's eyes widened. "What?! I don't do that! I try to keep away from her! She scares me!"
Jay Wing spat into the ocean below them. "And she's hitting on my stupid asshole cousin."
"I want to die, Jay Wing." Hawk said as he looked down into the water. "I want to die young."
Jay Wing put his nose to Hawk's cheek affectionately. "No."
Hawk continued. "But I feel like I shouldn't, for you, of course."
They sat in silence for a few moments, until Hawk spoke up.
"What's it like, being a townsperson?" He asked Jay Wing.
Jay Wing inhaled. "It's the fucking worst." He began. "My parents starve me and won't let me leave my room, I'm never at the house because when I come back they beat me, they treat Feather Tail so nicely but not me. Nobody cares about me, either."
A wave of empathy flew through Hawk. "I care, Jay Wing. I care more than the world."
Jay Wing smiled. "I love you, Hawk."
Hawk smiled back. "Me too.. But.."Jay Wing looked concerned. "But what? What's wrong?"
Hawk closed his eyes. "In cavedweller society, we're not allowed to like people that aren't girls. It's considered a sin, and against Mira and Zios. It's illegal."
Jay Wing's expression turned careless and stubborn. "Well who cares! Your cavedweller society makes you sad, anyway! You should live with me, we could build a house together in the town and be happy forever!"
Hawk's frown curled into a grin and he stood up. "Yeah!"
"Come on." Said Jay Wing childishly. "Let's go!"
Hawk followed closely behind as they made their way into town.
"Wait." Hawk said, as they finally got back to town."
"I have to go home."
Jay Wing sighed. "Can I come with this time?"
Hawk shook his head. "Next time."
Hawk padded away quickly, leaving Jay Wing in town.

Hawk stopped when he saw Crooked Tooth waiting for him.
"You and that boy." Crooked Tooth growled, sinking his claws into the dirt.
"What about him?" Hawk said slyly. He wasn't up to deal with his dad's shit this morning.
Crooked Tooth groaned. "You're falling for a BOY, Hawk! You're clearly in love with that sack of trash."
Hawk hissed. "I am NOT! And he is not trash, dad, you're just so caught up in your own stupid fuckin' issues that you can't handle the fact that I have people who like me and you don't!"
"That is not TRUE!" Crooked Tooth snapped. "It is ILLEGAL to like someone of your own gender, you dumb child! You're not legally allowed to fall in love with citizens, either!" He lashed his tail angrily.
Crooked Tooth raised his paw and unsheathed his claws, long, black, and shiny.
"What the fuck are you DOING?!" Snapped a voice.
Starry Leap was there.
"A-Aren't you Gwennie's friend I see her talk to during the night?" Hawk asked.
"Yes, I am. My name's Starry Leap. But what the hell is going on?!" Starry Leap shouted at the two.
"He's trying to hit me because I fell in love with a citizen who just happens to not be a girl!" Hawk complained.
"Crooked Tooth!" Starry Leap shouted at the man. "Get a hold of yourself! Accept your son, or I will make you!"
Crooked Tooth groaned. "I refuse to. Gwennie has claimed that he hits her anyway, he is no male. He is pathetic."
Starry Leap hissed. "I have watched Gwennie, seen her thoughts, seen Hawk's thoughts, NONE OF THAT HAPPENED!"
Crooked Tooth began laughing. "You cannot read minds, you psychopathic witch!"
Starry Leap ran towards Crooked Tooth and hit him in the side so hard that he fell to the floor. "You need help, not me." She growled at the leopard.
Suddenly, Jay Wing ran through the bushes and came towards Starry Leap and Hawk. "I heard shouting, whats going on?"
Hawk sighed and came close to Jay Wing. "I'm so glad you're here!" He said. "I was thinking.. Maybe you could stay with me tonight after all. I'd like to show you the mountains anyway."
Crooked Tooth got up and started heading in the wrong direction. "I'm going hunting." He snapped.
Starry Leap smiled. "You two have fun. I must go now." And she flew into the air.
Jay Wing and Hawk began their walk home.
