"Where are we going, anyway, father?" Sky asked as they trudged through the mud that came before the mountains.
"We're heading to the mountains to see.. Someone." Crooked Tooth told her blankly.
"Ooh! Who? Who!?" Sky bounced up and down excitedly, splashing small amounts of mud everywhere.
"Stop that, will you?" Hawk groaned, pulling his ears back and attempting to shake the bits of mud out of his fur.
"Well, you have.. A sister." Crooked Tooth tried to sound calm, but he almost sounded amused. As soon as Sky heard these words, her ears perked up and she grinned.
"A sister? What's she like? What's her name? How does she look? How old is she?!" Sky smiled and her eyes stared right at Crooked Tooth.
"Her name is Gwennie." Said Crooked Tooth thoughtfully. "She was born to Storm and I, Storm being your new mother instead of Stealth Eye."
The words 'new mother' angered Hawk even further. But this time his anger was not directed towards Crooked Tooth, it was directed towards his new sister, Gwennie.
Gwennie was the reason Hawk would never see his love again.
This was all Gwennie's fault.
Hawk felt the urge to lash out at his dad inside him, but he wanted to hear more description before he did such a thing.
"We'll be living in the mountains with her and Storm for a while." Crooked Tooth smiled, which was quite unnatural for him, and continued on walking.
Hawk groaned. He did not want to go to the mountains, he did not want to see baby Gwennie. He did not want to be with the little cavedwellers in their stupid caves.
He wanted to be home. Where he belonged.
Not in a large cave surrounded by a multitude of people he didn't know.
His tail hit the ground and he sighed, hoping that his dad couldn't hear the audible disappointment.
He looked up at the stars. Boring patterns that supposedly made the shapes of animals and strange creatures littered the sky. Hawk never liked looking up at the sky, it made him feel small and weak.
"We're here." He heard Crooked Tooth say as they stopped at a mountain that had a large cave entrance up above.
Crooked Tooth hopped onto a rock on the mountain and shouted up towards the cave entrance. "Storm! It's me, Crooked Tooth!"
Hawk watched a purple and black leopard gaze down from the cave entrance, her yellow eyes flashing in the moonlight. "I'll be right down." She called back to Crooked Tooth, and she turned back into the cave.
Hawk spent a few moments analyzing everything going on around him. He already disliked Storm, her strange cavedweller accent hurt his ears in a way he was unable to describe.
Storm suddenly ran out of the cave entrance and hopped down beside them. "Holly Scar will get us some food when we get up, may I carry one of your kits?"
Hawk's tail swayed at that word. 'Kits'. Hawk was no kit. He was nearly 15! How dare Storm treat him as if he were a child.
Storm set the tired, half-asleep Sky on her back and began hopping up the rocks to the mountain. Hawk had never seen such a strange act before, and gazed in bemusement.
"Do you think you can make it up on your own, Hawk?" Crooked Tooth said to the young leopard, not even bothering to look at him.
Hawk nodded. "Yes. I'll be fine."
Hawk watched as Crooked Tooth hopped up the mountain rocks like he'd done it a million times before, this only boiled the anger inside Hawk further, somehow.
Hawk hopped from rock to rock, slamming into them with his paws and angrily crushing some of the stones he stepped on. The loud bangs and crashes from the rocks seemed to have caught the attention of a black cat of some sort.
"Are you alright?" Said the cat, looking at Hawk in concern.
Hawk hopped onto the second to last rock with a loud crack. "Yes. I'm doing okay."
The cat's ears went back slightly. "You don't look like you're doing okay, have you ever climbed rocks before?"
Hawk closed his eyes and stomped his paws into the last rock. "No. I've never seen a mountain this close up, either."
To Hawk's surprise, the cat smiled and laughed. "That's funny! Hey, aren't you Crooked Tooth's kid?"
Hawk nodded. "Yes, but I feel as if he's.. Dead to me."
The cat smiled. "I've felt that way before, too. The name's Holly Scar. I'm assuming you're Hawk."
Hawk stayed at Holly Scar's side as they walked into the cave. A calming, gentle aura came from the black she-cat. Hawk felt safe in her presence.
"So, what's life like for a cavedweller?" Hawk asked her.
Holly Scar stepped in front of him and let her tail sink to the ground. "I'd love to show you."
Hawk smiled. "That'd be nice."
Holly Scar dashed off towards a small room in the cave. "Follow me! This is our main lobby."
Hawk entered a large room, decorated with plants and things he didn't recognize, and a few tunnels leading to other rooms.
"We have rooms for our healer, kits and pups, elders, feeding, bathing, just about everything!" Holly Scar bragged to Hawk excitedly. "I'd love to let you see it all, but I think it'd be best for you to only meet everyone here and then settle down for the night."
Hawk nodded. "Yeah, I'd say that's a better idea."
Holly Scar turned around. "Oh! You should meet the kits and pups first! It's resting time, so their parents will be in the room with them."
Hawk nervously followed Holly Scar into one of the tunnels.
This was it. He's going to meet the one that ruined his entire life.
