Hawk was woken up by a paw to his head. "Wake up, Hawk! It's gonna be your first day at a real Jamaa school!" Sky's voice echoed through the room.

Hawk groaned. "Tell papa I'm sick. I'm not going anywhere, not when I feel this bad."

Sky frowned. "But Haaaaawk! What will you do when I'm gone?"

"Well," Hawk smiled and sat up. "I have a plan."

"Both of us are going to stay home. We will say that the ash in the cave has made us sick because we are not used to it, and then we'll go explore outside."

"Woah.." Sky said. "That's a big lie, Hawk. I don't think that's a good idea."

Hawk chuckled. "What would you rather do? Sit in a classroom for 9 hours, or explore the wilderness and get used to your surroundings? School is for losers anyway! We didn't have to go to school back when we lived with ma-"

Hawk stopped himself as soon as he tried to say the word 'mama'. His ears pulled back slightly and he turned to Sky. "Still. Just.. Please don't go."

Sky closed her eyes and nodded. "Okay." She said confidently. "I've never lied before, but I bet you're good at it!"

-

Hawk hopped down the final rock and sank his paws into the wet grass. "Come on, Sky!"

Sky nervously stepped onto a rock and slipped down, falling into the grass and laughing.

"Wow! Jamaa is so.. Beautiful! Thank you so so much for taking me out here!" Sky bounced around in the grass, splashing raindrops across the air.

Hawk smiled and looked at the sunrise. "You're welcome. Come on, let's go to the township and see what they have for sale!"

Sky and Hawk laughed excitedly and ran to the town.

Sky let out a slow "Woah!" as they entered the town, seeing many little shops and stores and lots of animals walking this way and that.

They stopped at a small food stand with rabbits decorated in fine candies.

Sky looked down at the rabbits dreamily. "Hawk, I have some money on me, is it okay if I get one of these for us?"

Hawk smiled. "That's fine! I haven't had any breakfast anyways." He padded towards the food stand and looked down at the rabbits. He laid his eyes on one with yellow and orange candies on it. Something about it made him feel happy.

He pointed towards the rabbit and whispered "this one" to his sister. Sky nodded and looked up at the two wolves running the stand. "May we have this rabbit, please?"

The orange female wolf at the stand looked down at the rabbit and back up at Sky emotionlessly.

"10 gems." She said, her voice sounding like a tired frog.

Sky passed the pile of gems to the wolf and the wolf in return slid the rabbit over to the two.

Sky picked up the rabbit in her jaws. "Let's go sit over there." She said, her voice muffled by the rabbit. She looked towards a small open area with a table.

They both walked towards the table and Sky sat the rabbit down, munching on the orange and yellow candies.

"This is really good! Way better than the food we had back at home." Hawk said happily, bringing his teeth down on an orange candy with a crushing sound.

"How come you got this one, Hawk?" Asked Sky, licking a yellow candy. "It's pretty sour. You usually liked the sweeter things that mama cooked."

Hawk looked up at the sky, viewing the eagles that flew overhead. "I just felt something, you know? I felt like this was the right choice."

Sky laughed. "You're so weird." She bit into the rabbit. "The taste of the rabbit mixed with the sour candy is very good, though! You picked a good one."

Hawk smiled. "Yeah.."

He looked down at the rabbit. All the candies were off of the white silky fur. "I'm done with my share of rabbit."

Sky looked at Hawk worriedly. "Are you sure? I don't want you to go hungry."

Hawk nodded. "I'm sure. Plus, you're skinnier than me. You should feel better eating more."

Sky took a bite of rabbit. "Okay, whatever you say, I guess."

Hawk heard a noise, and turned his attention to the food stand that they had just bought from.

He laid his eyes on the two wolves from earlier, but this time a smaller and younger wolf was with them.

He had gray and white fur with black stripes, the brightest yellow eyes had ever seen, a long black scarf around his neck and a fox hat atop his head.

He was by far the prettiest wolf Hawk had ever seen in his entire existence, he just had to speak to the boy.

The boy was yelling at his parents, who yelled back. He couldn't tell what they were saying, but he knew something was wrong when the larger male wolf, presumably the boy's father, got out a large baseball bat and held it in the air.

Hawk's mouth felt dry and he felt tears well up in his eyes. He couldn't bear to watch someone be hurt. Not in this way. Not by a parent.

Parents are supposed to love their children!

Hawk dashed towards the three, feeling the baseball bat's end strike his back.

He fell to the ground, curled into a ball. His back felt heavy and he groaned.

He'd never experienced pain this great before.

He stood up, dizzily trying to find somewhere to look that would focus.

"You hit that kid, you braindead jerk." The orange female said in the most monotone voice imaginable.

"I was TRYING to hit our stupid son, you bi-" The larger black wolf started, but paused as he saw the young boy run into the forest.

"Jay wing! You come back here before I beat your ass!" The black wolf yelled towards the forest, but got the rustling of leaves in reply.

Hawk ran towards Sky, making sure the wolf couple didn't see him. "Sky.." He panted.

"Hawk! Are you okay?!" Sky gasped, looking at the bruise forming on Hawk's back.

"We have to get him.." Hawk said, laying his head down on the table.

"Get who?! What happened?" Sky still eyed the bruise in worry.

"The boy.. He ran into the forest.. I can't let him die in there!"

"What boy?"

Hawk inhaled.

"I think it was Domino."
