'Selfie.' Dunni stretches out her phone and we all make crazy faces as we take a selfie.
It's Dunni's birthday and since the school is on a lockdown, she decided to hang out with those of us, that is her roommates, in Ibadan. That's me, Vanessa, Deb, Rose and Dayo. Bukola, a secondary school friend of ours, also with us in UI, is also here.
We're hanging out at the mall. You know, this is Ibadan, there are limited options when it comes to hang out spots, no lie.
We're at the Shoprite store at the mall and we're buying as many edibles as we can. Dunni's father is totally generous. He gave her so much cash for her birthday. We fill our baskets with bowls of ice cream, packs of Pringles, doughnuts, cake, drinks, chocolate bars and much more. I'm really bothered about the bill, but, the money won't be coming from my pocket anyway.
While we're doing this food shopping, we're cracking crazy jokes, taking crazy selfies and making a lot of crazy videos. One of the perks of shopping in this super large Shoprite branch at Palms on a week day, is you get to display your madness freely in certain corners and since too many people aren't at the mall, it's likely no stranger will catch you at these strategic corners in all the glory of your madness.
I, Dunni, Deb, Rose and Dayo are dancing to no music while Vanessa and Bukola are making videos. We're all laughing as we're having the time of our lives.
'What if people actually see you guys like this.' Bukola says.
'True o. Before they people start wondering who gave birth to us let's stop this madness abeg.' Dayo laughs.
'Nobody will see us joor.' I dismiss the thought and begin an extremely terrible moonwalk which gets others laughing.
Suddenly, a guy joins us in the isle where we are and we stop abruptly in the middle of our madness. He chuckles and shakes his head while we laugh out of our embarrassment. We leave that isle and continue with our food shopping.
When we're done with all our shopping at Shoprite, we still go round the mall for a little while for some window shopping, before we finally leave the mall.
We head to Dunni's house where we consume all the edibles we bought amidst some playful fights for equitable distribution. You can be sure that was not achieved. People like Dayo and the celebrant consume food rapidly, giving them an edge over slow eaters like me.
Afterwards we watch an American movie, Focus on the television through my flash drive. This is my fifth time seeing this movie, but Lord knows I could never get tired of it.
'So baby girl, we've got something for you.' I announce once the movie is done, while I remove my flash drive from the TV. 'Babes, oya.' I signal to the others to bring out the gifts we got for Dunni.
I and all my roommates put money together to get some things as birthday presents for Dunni. We sent our money to Deb who we sent to buy the things. We chose to get her a pair of earrings, perfume, and a pair of shoes.'Dunni, have these, on behalf of all of us you live with.' Deb says with a little laughter.
'Awwn. Thank you.'
Dunni is obviously super excited to receive the gifts. At around 5:30 pm we all decide to go home. I send a message to Light, who out of boredom, agreed to be my chauffeur for the day. I'm still shocked he agreed to such. Boredom can kill, honestly.
After the others have gone, Light arrives. He gives Dunni what he calls a "birthday hug" and we three chat for a while before I and Light take our leave.
'Light, this is not the way to my house.' I say as I realize that I do not know where he's heading to right now.
'Chillax Tse.'
