'This room needs mopping sha.' Deb says giving a look that shows her disapproval of the state of the room. Now, Deb is the perfectionist in the room. Everything has got to be in place, spotless and perfect at all times. Dunni shares this trait to an extent.
Today is Tuesday, but I and all my roommates except Onana and Tife, are in the hostel because the Academic Staff Union of Universities has embarked on a one-week warning strike, so no classes till next week.
'Now where do I get a mop?'
'Go and borrow mop from Dedun's room.' Rose says not lifting her eyes from the book she's reading. That girl can actually read for Africa. She reads all kinds of books, school books, novels, self help books, religious books, you name it. Vanessa is similar to her with this character. I try to learn this habit from them. They are both reading right now, while the rest of us are just killing time with our phones.
'Why would I want to enter that room?' Deb hisses.
'No be you dey find mop?' I respond
'Is Dedun not your friend?' Dunni teases.
The thing is Dedun a girl two rooms away from ours. Now, the girls in that room aren't exactly friendly. You could have a proper conversation with them today, and tomorrow, they could just ignore you while walking along the corridor, like your presence means nothing. They look down on people, and walk like they own the place. Dedun is the only one who talks to us consistently. But, Dedun is a hard core gossip. She goes from room to room, talking bad about people. She has a friend in almost every room on our floor.'Is she not also your friend?' Deb asks. 'Aren't you her namesake anymore?' Deb teases and Dunni hisses.
Dedun always greets Dunni as "namesake", because their names are quite similar. While she's Adedunni, Dunni's full name is Oladunni.
'So where will you get a mop?' Dayo asks. 'I always borrow from those girls. I don't know who else has o. Our next door neighbours don't have. ''I'll find.'
'So what? You'll go from door to door, asking for a mop?' Chioma joins in the conversation.
'That wouldn't be such a bad idea.' Mary says.
'Excatly!' Deb says and goes out of the room.
'Don't tell me she would actually go from room to room' I say.
'Anything to avoid that room mehn.' Vanessa shoots from her corner, where she's reading. Then, there's a knock on the door.
'Who's there?' Dayo asks.
'it's me, Mirabel.'
'Oh God!' Chioma says with a whisper.
Mirabel is this super friendly girl in the room right in front of ours. But, she is a talkative. I know it's quite hypocritical of me to call anyone a talkative since I'm sure that's also what I am, but Mirabel's talkativeness is just so over-the-top. When she starts talking, you get the fear she's about to talk you to death. And sometimes, the conversations she makes are quite dumb too.'Come inside, the door is not locked.' Mary yells.
'Hey girls! Can I borrow your broom?'
So she's just here to borrow a broom. Nice!'Yeah, sure, it's behind our back door.' Vanessa says.
'Okay.' Mirabel says as she moves to get the broom and starts leaving the room immediately she's done picking it up. This is too good to be true.
As she gets to the door, she suddenly turns back. I knew she couldn't just leave. I can see the expression on Chioma and Dunni's faces, you can tell they are displeased by this "turn" of events.
