'Etse.' Rose comes to sit on the table where I'm reading. Yes, I am reading... Exams are approaching. It's Thursday evening and well, no one looked at me strangely today. Didn't know stuff could die down so fast. Well, it's one of the perks of being in a nerdy school, everyone has better things to focus on, like studying for exams.
Only I and Rose are in the room right now. I bet the others are at the library, or most of them, if not all.
I turn to look at Rose and she takes a deep breath, staring at me with some kind of pity in her eyes.
'Erm...' She starts 'I need you to know Chris is not a bad guy.'
'Yeah, whatever.' I turn back to face my books.
I ended up telling the girls what actually happened last night.'Look, there's this girl he has always liked-- And-- She broke up with her boyfriend last week-- And then day before yesterday she told Chris she has always liked him sha-- Something like that sha-- So--' She stops like she doesn't know what else to say.
' Keep going, I'm listening. '
' Erm, let's just say he was confused-- You know guys--- It's like they don't know what they want...'
'You just said "was confused", how about now?' I turn to look at her again, with my right hand under my chin and my elbow on the table.
Rose sighs, 'She's the one he came to see last night. They had a long talk about the whole issue-- And-- They decided...
'They're together now, it's fine.' I shrug. 'What else do you have to tell me? Care to explain why he couldn't explain anything to me? '
'Ahan. He won't know how to explain it na. Look, she's kind of like "the girl of his dreams".' Rose rolls her eyes at herself after saying that.
'Look, I don't even particularly like the girl, I think she's manipulative. She says she liked him, but she was with his friend o.' She hisses. 'Na them sabi sef. I don't know why he likes her that much. You need to see the way he beat one guy black and blue when she overdrank alcohol and got super tipsy and the guy tried to take advantage of her.'
I remember Chris telling me about that on his birthday. But of course he did not claim to be the one who did the beating. He said it was the guy who threw the party that did that. Was he the one who threw the party? Did he lie about that to not seem aggressive to me, someone he just met?
' Before then I would vouch for Chris that he couldn't hurt a fly.''Who is this girl?' I want to know if it's one of their mates I happen to have met. I should have, since she stays in my hall.
'It's Princess.'
Yeah, I have met the Princess girl and she is one girl with this absolutely stunning beauty.'Okay.' I shrug. 'At whose house did it happen?'
'Huh?'
'The incident you just talked about. I know it was a party hosted by one of you. Chris partly told me about it. So, whose house?'
I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be his.'The only person who has always been all about throwing parties like American teenagers, Jay, her recently dumped boyfriend.'
'Wait, Jay is the guy she just broke up with? So, was she the one who dumped him or--'
' Yes na. Now she has moved on to Chris. I pity that guy. But I won't say anything. I just dey observe. '
' Wait a second, what exactly is this Jay guy like? I mean, I know he's supposed to be friends with Ellie, but he was busy discussing with Favour about--'
'Jay.' Rose hisses. 'He's just a-- I don't even know the word to use for that guy. His relationship with Princess sef, the kind you will look at and thank God you did not waste energy on having a boyfriend in secondary school. See if I go fully into gist about what my high school mates are like ehn, it cannot end today. Those people are just--- I really cannot describe them in one word. '
Rose can be so inarticulate with gist. But then, let me try and enjoy.
