Chapter 19:         “That Kind of Crush”

“Someone’s on a good mood today,” sabi ni Darren habang umuupo sa tabi ko.

Andito kami ni Darren sa usual spot namin sa ilalim ng puno, malapit sa soccer field. Niyaya niya kasi akong magmerienda pero kailangan ko pang sagutan ang natitira ko pang assignments para mamaya.

“Yes. You are always on a good mood.” Darren always is.

“I mean you,” sagot niya habang nakangiti. “Oh. C’mon! Something good happen?” he asked.

“Am I really that easy to read?” I asked him. Ganun ba kabilis mapansin na may something sa mood ko?

“Yap. You’re an open book, Bree.”

Darren looked ahead of him. “You’re easy to read. I can clearly see the way your forehead creases when you’re confused, the way your eyebrow raises when you don’t agree with things, the panic in your eyes when you’re trying to run away from someone, the way you smile effortlessly and genuinely when you like it. I can see and understand you clearly, more than you know.”

He said that as if he is imagining me from afar. It’s like he’s creating my image in his mind.

“Why? Do you think otherwise?” he looked back at me.

I nodded.

“My friends are good in hiding their feelings kasi. I mean, they can show you the feelings they only want you to know. You’ll never know kung nalulungkot ba sila o ano kung hindi mo talaga sila kilala nang lubusan. Akala ko ganun din ako.” I explained.

Sila Bianca and Jet ang magaling sa ganun. They can hide their feelings really well. I thought since friends kami na-adapt ko na yun. They don’t say anything about me being an open book. Maybe because I never bother concealing what I feel when I am with my true friends. I know it’s useless. They will find out anyways.

“You have friends?!” gulat na tanong ni Darren. Exaggerated na nanlaki ang mata niya. Kung kanina ay nakasandal pa siya sa puno, ngayon eh naka-indian sit na siya nang maayos habang nanlalaki ang mata.

“Yabang! Meron naman!”

“Sige nga. Name some.”

“Hmm. Si Bianca?”

“Bianca? Baka kilala ko.”

“Frances Bianca Sanchez,” I answered.

“Ah, the actress.” Darren recognized her. No doubt.

“From your class? Wala kang kaibigan?”
