Chapter 10
It was a terrible feeling, so terrible that he couldn't even try to explain. Every few minutes, the image of the two hugging, smiling, laughing would be in front of his eyes and it would be like a choking device for him.
His excitement had turned sour in those few minutes, happiness turned into bitterness, joy turned into jealousy, delight turned into anger. Only he knew how hard he had prayed in the last four years, how hard had he begged to God, just to see her once again, talk to her, try to convince her to give him another chance, give them another chance.
The few days when he had tried to find her, he had given everything he could. He was ready to use all his wealth, all his power to get them back and never let go. When his brothers told him that maybe she left willingly, he couldn't believe them, although in the bottom of his heart, he knew it was the truth. He knew he should have fought more, support her more, but his blind belief in his principles had closed his eyes so tightly that he had failed to see her tears, failed to see her give up, failed to see her leave him. And when she did, he simply couldn't believe it.
My Paanika can never leave me. He had mused. She just cannot.
He was somehow sure she would be back in some days but how wrong he was. She didn't come back the next day, or the next or the day after. He waited every minute, every day for the last four years. Do you know how many days are in four years? One thousand four hundred and sixty days. And do you know how many minutes is that? Twenty one lakh two thousand and four hundred minutes. And every minute was a like year for him. So you know how long he waited.
And when he finally saw her today, he couldn't believe it. He couldn't believe his luck. It felt like he could breathe again, felt like he could smile again, and felt like he could live again.
But when he met her, she didn't even acknowledge him properly, didn't even talk to him for more than a minute, and didn't even look at him for more than a few seconds. That gave him much more pain that he had borne in the last four years. She talked to everyone else with that amazing smile of hers but not to him. He accepted that.
Maybe she is still upset with me, still angry. Once we talk in private, I will make everything perfect. I will apologise to her, tell her my feelings and she will forgive me because I know she still feels the same for me.
So he followed her around, trying to find a minute when she is not busy and then talk to her. He was eager to take her away; to be with her alone as soon as possible but his eagerness was brutally crushed as he saw her jump into the arms of someone else, saw her smile joyously at him. And when she stepped front to hug him once again, that had felt like a punch at his face. The relief in her eyes for that man felt like a slap on Shivaay's face. The happiness, the glow on her face as she talked to that man felt like the whole world was laughing at his face.
Their comfort, their warmth, their smiles and laughs felt like needles piercing his eyes. All he could hear was Annika's words, I have moved on, and he felt like someone was hammering his ears.
Only God knows how he had controlled himself from not walking up to them and creating a huge scene, which would end in that man getting seriously injured. And only God knows how much it scared him to see her with someone else, the thought that she has really moved on killing him. But he had calmed himself, told himself that they are just friends, very good friends. He still had a chance.
"Bhaiyya." He heard Priyanka calling him and he looked behind. The younger Oberoi brood stood there silently, looking at him.
"Shivaay, I think we should attend this party." Om said with a thoughtful expression. "May be you can get some time to talk to her, clear things up?" He said and Shivaay nodded.
