"Miss. Lovato," the judge begins, "Would your judge please step up to the podium in your defense?"
I watch as Mom's judge walks up to the podium.
"James Grey is charged with kidnapping, assault, and perjury during a previous trial where he was declared innocent. Miss. Lovato and her daughter, Jasmine Lovato, were both kidnapped by James and were also assaulted by him and his friend, who is yet to have been caught."

"Miss. Jasmine Lovato, would you like to come up and make a victim impact statement along with your mom?"
I nod nervously and walk up to join Mom at the podium.

"That's not a worthy excuse," Mom says, "You were in prison up until two years ago. Do you really think that I'd let you see my daughter after that?"
"What do you think, Jasmine?" the judge asks.
"I don't want to see James," I say in a quiet voice.
"What did James' actions do to affect your life now?" the judge questions.
"He ruined my life," I say before I start crying.
For the next few weeks, the court case continues the same way. Then, comes the day where we get to hear the verdict.
"I declare James Grey..."
