A Promise

Rey could barely breathe. Spots of pain blurred her vision, seemingly permanently stuck. She struggled to her feet, but couldn't stand before collapsing once more. She heard his footsteps. His throaty chuckle. She could see that evil glint in his eyes that had never been there before. The reflection of his red lightsaber lit up the rain around her. She held an already-bloodied hand to her side, where a lightsaber puncture wound radiated white-hot pain to every limb in her body.

"Ben, don't do this..." She choked out.

"This is not my fault, but yours, scavenger." Kylo Ren crouched in front of her, his voice raw. His lightsaber sizzled and steamed as it moved in the pouring rain to position itself in a killing strike.

"NOOOOOO!" A furious yell grew closer from behind Rey. She saw Kylo's head tilt up. She saw the reflection of a beloved pilot in Kylo's eyes.

"No, no... please no." She gasped. Kylo grinned. It was the only smile she had ever seen from him, but it was a smile she never wanted to see again. Poe, please... leave! She screamed in her mind. She was too weak to even say it out loud.

"I'm not letting you hurt her again." Poe's voice was steely, furious. Rey could see in her mind that fire in his eyes that he always had.

"And what are you going to do about it?" Kylo stood now.

"The question is, what are you going to do about it?" Poe spat. There was a blast. Rey gasped. As Kylo Ren dodged the first bullet, he swung at Poe in a horizontal swipe meant to decapitate him. Poe ducked and launched himself forward, sliding on the wet ground underneath Kylo's legs and behind him. Before Kylo Ren could swing around, Poe shot him in the back. Kylo collapsed into a wet, bleeding mess, and didn't move.

Rey trembled as Poe knelt down and gathered her into his arms. He gently pushed her sopping wet hair out of her face and smiled. Oh, she loved that smile. Tears slipped down Rey's cheeks, but they were not sorrowful tears.

"I, I, I don't... I don't understand. How did you beat him?" She stammered.

"His rage made his moves predictable, too predictable. You learn to see those sorts of thing after awhile." Poe explained. Rey hung her head.

"Thank you," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the storm. Poe wrapped his arms around her tighter, then scooped her up. Tilting his head down, he whispered lovingly into her ear.

"I promised I'd protect you. I meant it."
