"Well, hello sleeping beauty."
Taylor slowly opened her eyes with a groan, she recognized the face smiling down at her. "Jason, what happened? Where am I?"
The doctor flashed his dimpled grin. "Well, you remember me, that's a bonus. Do you remember yesterday?"
She thought for a moment. "I went jogging, and fell. There was a storm. Alex was with me." She looked around the hospital room. "Is he alright?"
"Oh, he's fine." Jason answered, "He was working on your leg for hours. Finally went home to get some sleep and see his kids."
"Of course." Taylor looked away. She struggled to sit up.
"Stay still." Jason pressed a hand to her shoulder. "I'll raise the bed." He pressed a button the on railing. The head of the bed lifted to a sitting position. "Better?"
Taylor's gaze was locked on her right leg was encased in black brace from her toes to her mid-thigh. She looked up at him, "What happened?"
"Don't worry, you'll be alright. Alex worked for hours to get the bones back together."
"Back together?" An image of her bone sticking out of her leg flashed through her mind, "Oh, my God."
"It will heal. According to Alex, if you follow instructions, you won't even have a limp."
She raised her left arm where a cast covered her from her fingers to her elbow. "What about this?"
"A clean break, it will heal easily." He sat on the edge of her bed, "Before you ask, you have a nice long cut on your stomach, that he closed. Three cracked ribs, and a a hell of a lot of cuts and bruises pretty much everywhere else."
"Falling down a cliff will do that."
"Yeah, right." He smiled, and reached out to brush her hair back. "There's a nice long cut on your forehead."
"When can I get out of here?"
"We need to keep you for a day or so, to watch that head injury."
"I need to work."
"Isn't your health more important?"
"Of course, but..."
"No buts. You'll get out of here as soon as we know you're okay." He stood, "In the meantime, just lay back," he picked up the remote for the television, "watch some really bad day time TV and relax."
"That's not so easy to do. I've got a lot of work to do."
"As do I." He turned to the door. "I'll check in on you soon."
He left. She laid back, and studied the braces and bandages that covered her body. "Oh, God." Tears pricked her eyes, she brushed them away, "No. I will not feel sorry for myself."
A short time later the door opened again, a nurse entered. "Good evening."
"What day is it?"
"Sunday." The nurse answered, "About six in the evening."
"God. I've lost the whole weekend." Taylor pushed back the blanket. "I need to go home."
"Uh, no." The nurse pressed Taylor's shoulder gently but firmly. "You need to stay still, Dr. Carver will be back shortly to check on you."
"I can't wait. I have work to do."
"Miss Dixon," The nurse, a woman of about the same age as Taylor, set her hands on her hips, "I promised Dr. Carver I'd take good care of you until he returns. Please don't make a liar out of me."
