"So she's avoiding you?"
Taylor nodded, and sat back as the waiter slid a salad in front of her. "I've tried to call her. She doesn't answer. I've driven to her husbands house, and knocked on the door. Their cars are there, but they don't answer."
"That's more than a little childish." Alex commented as he dug into his salad.
"My mother doesn't like conflict. She'll do anything to avoid it."
"Which is why she has allowed your siblings to always get what they want?"
"Pretty much. They would start throwing a fit, and she'd give in to them just to shut them up."
"I guess it's not surprising she's been married so many times."
"Yeah, well. She doesn't marry because she's in love. She gets married because she doesn't want to be alone."
"She has six kids, and just as many grand kids. She's never going to be alone."
"Mom doesn't see it that way. She needs male companionship. It's how she feels safe."
"Maybe you should force her to talk to you somehow."
"No, she's my mother. If she doesn't want to talk to me, then I have to respect that."
Alex rested his elbows on the table, and studied her, "But hasn't she left you with more work?"
"Yes, I have to do the accounting for the resorts now. It's a lot."
"Why don't you just hire a service?"
"I'm tempted, but wanted to give her a chance to come back first." Taylor glanced out over the water. The restaurant sat on the edge of the pier, with a view overlooking Lake Michigan, "I love this place."
He reached out to take her hand across the table. "I'm glad you agreed to come with me."
She grinned, "Me too. I'm also glad you decided to go somewhere other than the resort."
"It would have been difficult to have any privacy with your employees listening in."
"Oh, and they would. No doubt! They wouldn't be able to pass up the chance to gossip about the boss and the doctor."
Alex laughed, "How are things going at the office?"
"Okay for the most part. I went back today for the first time in weeks. That cold just wouldn't let up."
"The new medicine worked though?"
"Yes, thank goodness."
"I think Jason needs to get off his ass." Alex shook his head, "He should have been checking in on you."
Taylor sighed, "Alex, we've been over this. Jason is an adequate doctor. But he does the bare essentials, he doesn't get to the bottom of an illness, and if it takes longer for an illness to run its course then that's fine."
"He should be helping you get through illnesses faster. The more you're sick the longer it's going to take for your immune system to rebuild. I would have put you on steroids right away."
"Yes, but you're not my doctor. Jason is, and he just told me to take over the counter stuff."
Alex shook his head angrily.
"You could have continued to be my doctor, Alex. I would prefer you. I trust you."
"Conflict of interest." He replied before taking another bite of his salad.
