Chapter One

Arlen

My throat burned and my tongue felt like sandpaper as I licked my lips. I wheezed softly as I tried to remember the last time that I had water. My stomach wasn't any better. The hunger pains had gotten so bad that I had come close to passing out. I was dying, and it wouldn't be long until I succumbed to starvation, or killed by my kidnapper. I should have listened when my mother begged me to stay home that night, if I had just obeyed my mum's wishes, I wouldn't be in this predicament now. I can only imagine how worried she is about me. I'm so cruel, doing this to the woman who raised and cared for me with all she had.

I didn't know how long I'd been here, being trapped down in what I assumed to be a basement; I lost all sense of time. I knew that it had to have been a few weeks. I knew this because my skin was starting to turn dark from my lack of bathing. Water, I needed it desperately.

My heart leaped into my throat as the basement door suddenly slammed open. I watched in surprise and horror as my kidnapper rushed over to me. Shouts and sirens reached my ears, and for the first time in what felt like forever, I felt joy. It was short-lived. My chains clanged against the concrete as my assailant grabbed a fistful of my hair and yanked hard, exposing my neck.

A cool and sharp blade was placed against my skin, and adrenaline ran a marathon through my veins. Not long after, the swat and other police officers filed into the basement, all of them becoming cautious when they saw my situation.

"Put the gun down and get away from the boy!" an authoritative voice boomed. Strained whimpers left my quivering body as I glared fearfully at the blade pressed harshly against my neck.

"Put your weapons down!" my captor shouted, "Or I swear to God, I'll kill him!"

My heart was beating a mile a minute as I prayed to whatever omnipotent being that was listening to save me. I couldn't die like this! I was only eighteen and had just graduated high school! I had so much more to live for! I have to apologize to mom, for putting her through so much stress and not listening to her when I should have. I can't die yet!

"P-Please, no!" I rasped.

"Shut the fuck up!" he snarled.

"Please," a man dressed in a suit whispered. He stepped into the room, his hands raised up in surrender as he tried to reason with the deranged man that held me hostage.

I could feel his body vibrate as he screamed in fury, "I'm not going back to jail! I just know as soon as I put this knife down, you'll arrest me and take me back! No way! No way in hell!"

Spittle flew onto my face as a cry left me. My shoulders ached and the blade had started to cut into my skin. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I made eye contact with one of the police officers. Save me, please don't let me die here. Pain shone deeply in his blue eyes as he resisted the urge to pull the trigger.

"You have my word that I'll work something out! Just please, let him go, let him go and I will help you, I promise," the man in the suit tried to reason.

All was quiet except for the sound of my whimpering and the harsh, shuddering breaths leaving the occupants in the room. I cast a glance at my kidnapper's face. From this angle, I couldn't really see what his expression was, but I knew he was considering the offer. Maybe this'll all work out and I'll get to see my mom again.

It seemed that luck wasn't on my side, because within the next second, a long, serrated blade was sticking out of my throat. It felt like time had suddenly started moving in slow motion as the occupants in the room registered what had happened. My eyes were wide in shock as I felt warm blood leak from my wound. It didn't take me long to realize what happened and what this meant for me. I didn't even feel pain. Shouts, screams, and the sound of gunshots was the last thing that I remembered before I lost consciousness.

This is just a little teaser for what I have in store for me next book. It may or may not come into existence, who knows. But, I have, a lot of plans. Please tell me what you think of it so far!
