Ch. 37
Arlen
As small as Shiro was, her stomach was a bottomless pit. The baby dragon never stayed full for long. She ate as if there was no tomorrow. I sat back on my chair with the she dragon in my lap. She was lying on her back and tearing through a peach that she was holding with her front paws. It was the most adorable thing I had ever seen, with the exception of the juice she was getting all over herself. I would have to clean her yet again to prevent her from becoming all sticky.
As soon as the sun rose, we left Scale. No one wanted to stay in that tomb any longer than necessary. As of now, we were on our way to Slade. Thankfully, Slade was very close to Scale, so we wouldn't have to camp out in the open. The only thing we were hoping for was to find people who were alive. We needed information. As usual, there was snow everywhere accompanied by the many, many carcasses of the animals that once thrived here. I had grown used to the snow and ice, but the temperature dropped lower and lower every day. As usual, we were in my special bubble cloud and I was following a map Gabriel had left out for me.
Apparently, Slade was much bigger than Scale and was full of retired adventurers. Gabriel was certain Slade was okay, but I still couldn't help but be worried. I didn't want to go through what we went through back at Scale. As soon as that thought crossed my mind, I secretly glanced at Riza. Her face was void of any emotion, but her eyes told another story. They held her promise for vengeance. I was very worried about my guildmate. Since she discovered her family back in Scale, she hadn't said a single word. She wouldn't even eat. I hadn't had a chance to get close to Riza, so I was a bit too shy to try and offer comfort, but I wanted to help her as much as I could. Besides, we were both ready to kill whoever devastated this land, they had hurt Shiro.
I looked up as I saw that we were approaching Slade. The first thing I saw was a massive yellow barrier that covered the entire city. It reminded me of Melvin's barrier that he used to shield us during the demon hour.
"They're alive!" I gasped.
"Thank Goodness," I heard someone mutter from behind me.
I sped up and stopped just outside of the massive barrier. Almost immediately, the city gates opened and two massive lizardmen ran out of the city carrying their weapons. I sat us down and allowed Gabriel to step in front of me. From where I stood, I tried to get a look inside of the city, but all I managed to see was more warriors running out of the city, glaring at us with extreme hostility.
"Who are you?!" One of the lizardmen shouted, "What do you want?!"
Without uttering a word, Gabriel reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a slip of paper, handing it over to the guards. With a scoff, the warrior snatched the paper out of Gabriel's hand and read over the contents. I had no idea what the paper said, but judging from the warrior's change in expression, it told him all that he needed to know about us and what we were doing here.
"Finally," he breathed, "Someone is here to help us. Quick! Somebody go and alert the Lord! Tell him that The Shadow Realm from the kingdom of Nox is here to assist us!"
The attitude towards us immediately changed as the residents of the city were filled with hope. Throwing down his weapon, the lizard man got down on his knees and apologized for his behavior.
"It's ok, you were only doing your job," Gabriel said.
While they talked, I held a restless Shiro in my arms. She was a very curious and very nosy little dragon and wanted to know what was going on. I rubbed her back, hoping that she would calm down. I had no idea how the residents would react to me being in possession of a baby dragon. Whatever the case, I knew that I would not allow them to separate me from Shiro, but I was hoping to avoid any problems.
With a growl, Shiro crawled back into my coat. Despite being nosy, it was still cold so she didn't stay out for long.
"Please come inside, I wouldn't want to keep you all in the cold longer than necessary," the guard said. Thanking him, Gabriel stepped through the barrier and we all followed behind him. As soon as we passed the barrier, the temperature immediately changed. I was suddenly warm all over. I sighed in relief, grateful to finally be out of the cold weather. Seth was especially happy.
"Oh thank God!" Seth cried happily.
I chuckled at his enthusiasm. I looked to my left as I felt someone walk up beside me. I was immediately met with Landon's green eyes. I narrowed my eyes at him. I was still a bit annoyed with him for cracking Shiro's egg, but since nothing bad had happened, I forgave him. Although he had been forgiven, that did not mean I didn't have to give him a hard time.
With a sheepish smile, he reached into my coat and petted Shiro who was starting to become active again.
Suddenly, my attention was drawn to a commotion near the gate. Though we were inside the barrier, we were still outside of the city. A very large man walked out of the city gates, his eyes locked on us. From his face, I knew that he didn't like us being here. He was dressed in very expensive clothes and had a large, golden crown on his head. He was extremely overweight and looked to be healthy despite what was happening. It would seem as if he hadn't suffered much. As he approached, everyone got down on one knee and placed a hand over their chest, the same thing one would do if they were meeting a king. I internally scoffed; this man was obviously having a power trip. Since we weren't from here, we remained standing.
"Good Morning, I am Lord Griffin, ruler of this magnificent city. My informants tell me you all are from Nox and are here to help us," the man said as he approached us. He eyed every last one of us, his eyes lingering on Riza. I smirked; her beauty really was a force to be reckoned with.
"I am Gabriel Silver, guild master of The Shadow Realm guild," Gabriel replied as he gestured towards us, "As of late, dragons have been leaving this place and attacking people. We know that the dragons wouldn't willingly leave their home unless something was seriously wrong, hence our presence here. I would like you to shed some light on the situation here."
The Lord tried to keep his facial expression neutral, but I could see that he was horribly displeased with us being here. I grabbed Landon's hand and looked at him. Since I couldn't speak out loud, I used telepathy, a spell I had acquired thanks to the fight with Yami.
'I think he has something to do with what's happening here,' I whispered into Landon's mind.
If he was shocked, he didn't show it. Since Landon couldn't respond back to me, I continued.
'The people of Scale were killed in an instant, meaning that they didn't see what was coming, but here we find a massive barrier and this Lord who looks unbothered. This city, like Scale, was should have been wiped out. He knows something, I can feel it.'
Landon looked down at me with wide eyes. I knew he hadn't thought of that possibility, heck, I hadn't even thought about why it until I met this Lord. I looked towards Riza. Her eyes were murderous. She had drawn the same conclusions I had. I had a feeling things were going to get really ugly very fast.
