Ch. 5

Arlen

I could barely contain my excitement as Helen worked a brush through my hair. I was more than excited to visit the adventurer's guild and register as an adventurer, I was also excited to meet new people and raise my level. After securing the braid with a hair tie, I stood up and stood in front of Helen's body mirror. My hair was neat enough, but the baggy overalls and the white t-shirt was the only thing Helen had that was gender neutral. My feet were adorned in black flats. I looked like some hillbilly.

"You don't look that bad," Helen said as she surveyed me from the mirror, a look of pity on her face. While I was dressed like a slob, Helen looked decent in her short, black, flowy skirt, gray thigh highs, a white button down and a pair of combat boots. Her black hair was also done up in a neat, high pony tail. Her tall ears were also adorned with earrings.

She softly tapped my leg with her tail and pointed towards the door.

"After each quest is complete, you will be compensated. Also, any monsters killed will drop items that can be sold. By the end of today, we'll be able to buy you a few outfits," Helen explained as she gazed at me apologetically. Sighing, I nodded and followed her as she led me out of the door. Turning around, she snapped her fingers and the lights in the apartment turned off.

My eyes widened and I was a little tempted to snap my fingers to see if the lights would come on, but Helen had closed the door and led me away from the apartment before I could. Very quickly, my attention was snatched by the beauty of the town. Yesterday, I hadn't gotten a good enough look because Helen wanted to get inside before the demon hour, but now that the sun was out and we weren't in too big of a rush, Helen allowed me to take my time looking around.

I was immediately in awe by how beautiful the town was. Little shops, cafés and other buildings dotted the place. Every building looked different and had its own little quirks. Beside the cobblestone sidewalk in which Helen and I walked on, there was a road made of smooth brick. My jaw dropped when I saw what looked to be a dragon pulling a wagon down the road, and a lizard man sitting in the driver's seat, along with a woman who looked to be his lover.

Helen giggled quietly as she looked down at me, but I was awestruck at the different kinds of people that occupied this world. I swooned when I saw three centaurs, a man, a woman, and a small child laughing happily between them. Unable to stop myself, I waved at them enthusiastically and they happily waved back. That wasn't all. Fairies that flew using transparent wings, ghosts that floated up and down the sidewalks, people with long horns on the top of their heads, people like Helen who sported a pair of cute ears and a tail, people whose skin color looked as if it belonged on the rainbow, and people who didn't look at people at all! There was even a woman who had the torso of a human, but the rest of her body was that of a large snake. Her scales were a beautiful bright red color. Her hair was as black as night and her eyes were the same color as her tail. I couldn't help but compare her to a vampire.

"It's so beautiful," I whispered quietly, "This place is amazing."

Helen smiled, "It is. I love this place."

After about an hour of just walking around, we made it to the adventurer's hall. The place didn't look very big, but it was surrounded by people who were laughing, eating, and drinking. They were all sat on benches under a large shade. Upon our arrival, a centaur man ran up to Helen and greeted her.

"Helen!" he cried. Suddenly very shy, I hid behind Helen's tall frame and stared at him. He had very dark and beautiful skin and a head full of black curls and two very tall, white ears. His fur was black and also spotted with white dots here and there. His hooves were also white. His bright green eyes shined with excitement as he and Helen chatted. He was dressed in armor and had a large sword on his back. He also had on what looked to be black pants, covering up his privates.

I wonder how he got those on, but seeing as Helen could make her bow disappear and turn off lights with the snap of her fingers, I shouldn't be surprised if he used magic.

His gaze suddenly met mine, and his eyes widened in what I assumed to be shock.

"He's one of the reincarnated ones," he whispered. I turned to Helen in confusion, wondering just how he knew that information. She sighed and pointed to the blue oval on my forehead.

"Everyone who has reincarnated into this world has some kind of symbol on their body. I forgot to mention it before, sorry."

Nodding, I turned back towards the centaur, sending him a shy smile. A bright smile broke out across his face and he held his hand out to me.

"My name is Casper, it's nice to meet you!" he said enthusiastically.

"Arlen," I smiled as I gave his hand a shake.

His face suddenly darkened and he asked, "Do you remember?"

I immediately shook my head no. I didn't want his pity. It might not have been a good idea to lie to him, but I didn't want anyone looking at me any differently. Helen sent me a furtive glance before turning back to Casper, brightening the mood with the story of how she found me naked and passed out in the middle of the forest. I huffed and swatted her arm, embarrassed. Casper whipped the tears out of his eyes as he took a couple of deep breaths to ease his laughing fit.

"So," he chuckled, as he stared down at me, "Are you here to register as an adventurer?"

"Yes!" I practically shouted.

As we walked inside if the building, Casper asked, "What class are you?"

"I'm a Caster," I answered him. His eyes widened and he shook his head, casting a questioning look towards Helen.

"It's true," she clarified, "I was just as shocked when I found him in the woods and checked out his status."

Casper was silent in awe as we walked to the receptionist desk. My face reddened. Surely being a Caster wasn't that big of a deal, right? As we approached the desk, I was surprised to see that the woman standing behind the desk looked human. After all the types of people I saw today, I was expecting someone else.

"Hello, how may I help you all today?"

I remained quiet, letting Helen do all the talking. It didn't take long before the woman handed me a card. As soon as I took it, it disappeared into a golden mist and my status screen popped up as I was looking around for the card. With a frown, I glanced at my screen, seeing another tab under my name that read occupation, separated by a colon was the word Adventurer.

Helen and Casper giggled at my confused face and I pouted.

"Congratulations, Sir!" the woman said as she pointed towards what looked to be a large bulletin board.

"Over there is the quest board. There, adventurers such as your selves are able to accept quests. I wish you the best in your endeavors!"

Thanking the woman, I moved over to the bulletin board and watched as Helen and Casper looked over the quests. While they did this, I looked over the place. I loved how simplistic it looked and how good the food smelled. It was filled with benches and those benches were filled with people drinking, eating, and having a good time. The atmosphere was great, and I found myself already loving this place.

For the first time, I was glad that I was given a second chance at life here in this world.
