Ch. 9

Arlen

I had always hated physical activity, even when I lived on earth, I hated any and everything associated with physical activity. Being in a new body and on a new planet didn't change a single thing for me, I still loathed it. Capturing killer plants required me to run, jump, and practically face plant into the water, and that immediately made me hate the action of capturing killer plants. What made the situation even worse were their faces that smiled up at me with such innocence. Those oval black eyes that shined with childlike curiosity, those rosy red cheeks, and that smile that was filled with nothing but trust, trust that you'd never hurt them. But there was a reason that they were called killer plants.

1 hour earlier

I grimaced as my sweatpants soaked up the pond water, making it harder for me to move. I tried keeping myself dry by willing the water not to touch me, but that required more mana and strength that I had at the moment, so I had to bear with it.

I turned towards Casper, my eyes narrowing in jealousy at his long legs and dry clothes. Seeing my expression, he swished his tail teasingly and laughed at my predicament. I huffed and waded towards the middle of the pond, looking for the infamous killer plants. I looked in all directions, frowning when I didn't see any smiling plants.

"Where are they?" I asked in annoyance, "Please don't tell me that you have me wading through this purple, murky water for no reason!"

Casper snickered, "No, they're underwater. No worries, they'll notice our presence soon."

I remained quiet, softly sloshing around in the water in hopes that they'd show themselves soon. Despite not liking being trapped in this bothersome quest, it would be a lie to say that I wasn't a bit curious to see how they look. I wanted to see what these killer plants were all about, and what made them so deadly.

We stood there soaking up the water until, suddenly, I felt something brush against my leg. Being the scaredy cat I was, I released a shrill scream and bounded over to Casper who was staring at me with wide and surprised eyes.

"Something touched me!" I shouted, "Something slimy brushed against my leg!"

Upon reaching him, I stood behind him and peered out at the disturbed water. As soon as my eyes came in contact with my slimy assailant, my jaw dropped. The killer plant looked as if it had walked right out of a children's book. Just as I was told, it had an extremely cute face that was surrounded by large, white petals. Its body was thin, just like any stem of a plant, and it had long leaves that I assumed were its arms. It body moved like a squiggly line, never pausing and never taking any brakes, it was almost as if it was dancing to a song that only it could hear.

A chill went down my spine and I shivered displeasingly. They were even creepier than I imagined they would be, but for some reason, I couldn't bring myself to hurt the creature. The way it stared at me without any doubt, as if it trusted me wholeheartedly and would never expect me to hurt it in any way made me feel guilty for even having such intentions.

"Hook, line, and sinker," I heard Casper sigh.

And without any warning, a large, black thorn shot out of the water at a speed faster than that of a heartbeat. My eyes widened in shock and a shout of surprise left my mouth. Without even thinking, I cast a barrier around Casper and I, shielding us both from what could have been a deadly blow. It was like slow motion as I watch the thorn bounce off of it; the shield was large and immediately had me breathing hard. My status screen flashed in front of me, and I was shocked to see that I had gone up five levels and that my mana was practically depleted. That spell was a powerful one. Suddenly, my spell book appeared in front of me and opened, the pages flipping randomly until it landed on the spell that I had cast. Casper looked over, his green eyes shining in excitement.
