Ch. 33
Arlen
I floated out of the cave and back the way I came. I wrapped myself in one of the blankets that I'd given Seth, trying to make the baby dragon as warm as I possibly could. Upon exiting the cave, I was startled at just how dark it was. With speed that was borderline dangerous, I made my way back to the lake. Once again, I traveled at breakneck speed, so fast that the outside world looked like a blotch of paint on a white canvas. Minutes later, I entered Melvin's barrier and made my way to the camp the others set up.
Almost immediately, Link stomped up to me, his red eyes glowing with fury. I remained inside my cloud, knowing that he wouldn't be able to reach me if I denied him entrance.
"What the hell, Arlen?!" he hissed as he glared furiously at me, "Why the hell did you take off like that?! Do you know how dangerous this place is?!"
Link continued to scold me, but I drowned him out. Since I'd rescued the baby dragon, her whimpers for help had all ceased. She was purring, happy that she was warm again. I peeked into my shirt at the egg, grinning.
"What is that?" a deep voice suddenly asked. I looked up, my wide eyes meeting with Riddick's red ones. I wrapped my arms around my stomach protectively. He narrowed his eye at me and my face flushed. How had I not thought about how I would tell the others about my discovery?!
"It's nothing!" I squeaked. Really? Is that the best answer you can come up with?! They obviously know that you're hiding something! I suddenly became nervous. What if me saving this egg wasn't the right thing to do? I hadn't thought twice about saving her before, but now that I had, I was starting to have second thoughts. I huffed and shook those thoughts away. I didn't save her for nothing! Regardless of what the others thought, I would keep her. I was officially a dragon owner!
Sighing, I pulled out my wand and held it up into the air. Within seconds, the nearby trees uprooted themselves and formed a small bedroom around me. I would need a warm space in order to show them. Shiro couldn't be exposed to any more cold air under any circumstances. I also wasn't going to sleep outside during the demon hour. Standing up, I emerged from my cloud and used it to cover the icy floor and lastly, created a small fire pit in the center of the room. Using a small spell, I lit up the room.
With the egg still safely tucked away under my shirt, I carefully lowered myself down in front of the fire. Seth snuggled next to me, his curious eyes locked onto my protruding belly.
"Sorry for leaving you earlier," I said to him with a sheepish smile.
"I'll forgive you if you show me what's under your shirt."
I waited until the room was warm enough before carefully lifting my shirt. You would have thought I'd been holding a severed head by the way everyone backed away from me. I narrowed my eyes at them and covered Shiro back up. They all looked at me as I were a madman.
"Are you insane?!" Gabriel hissed as he stomped towards me. I quickly retreated into my cloud.
Gabriel growled in anger, "Why did you take that egg from its nest?! Do you want the mother to come looking for it?! Are you trying to get us all killed?!"
I rolled my eyes.
"Her mother was dead," I snapped, "Along with her three siblings. If I hadn't got to her when I did, she would have been dead by now! You said yourself that dragons couldn't survive in this kind of weather."
I rubbed the egg again, smiling softly at the sound of Shiro purring contently.
"She was calling out for help; I just couldn't leave her there. Aren't we here to save the dragons?"
Gabriel looked almost sad as he stared at me.
"You are correct," he sighed, "But it's still a dragon and still dangerous, baby or-,"
I quickly cut him off, growing angry and irritated. Honestly, was this big bad demon afraid of a baby dragon, one that hasn't even hatched yet? If her mother was anything to go off of, then that meant that no dragon could afford to take care of themselves as well as a baby. This land was now a free for all, I couldn't leave her there! The Dragons were an intelligent race, meaning that if she was abandoned, she would have been taken in by another, but not in this case. The dragons that were alive were doing all they could to keep themselves alive. I knew that Gabriel was aware of this, he's just being stubborn!
"If you expect me to toss her away then you have another thing coming. I didn't save her for just to toss her back out into the cold. Do you really think I would do such a thing?! I won't let any of you hurt her. Try anything and you'll regret it, and that goes for all of you!"
Gabriel looked murderous, but I wasn't scared at all. I meant what I said. I had no idea why I was so protective over this baby dragon, but I didn't care. I would fight the whole world if I had to. She was mine. It would seem that Gabriel didn't appreciate being challenged, but if it was a fight he wanted, then I was more than willing to give it to him.
With my eyes not leaving my guildmates, I pulled the egg from under my shirt and wrapped her in multiple blankets. The colder it got, the warmer the blankets would get, so I had no problem with letting her sit in my storage for a while. I exited my cloud and stood in front of Gabriel, my staff clutched tightly in my right hand.
I had a crazy, potentially dangerous plan in mind. Surprisingly enough, it wasn't Gabriel who struck first, it was Yami.
Yami had been marked on my Enemy Detection since I first activated the spell, so when she came towards me with murderous intent shining in her eyes, I was more than ready. I smirked and lifted my foot. We were standing on ice, and I was more than willing to play dirty. I stomped on the floor and almost immediately, the ice covering the lake exploded. The sound of the ice being broken sounded like an explosion going off. I knew very well that the noise was bound to attract some attention. I took to the air, watching as the room I'd made disappear below the murky depths. All that hard work gone to waste. Breaking the ice was what I was going for, but submerging them in icy cold water wasn't the only reason I broke the ice.
I watched in amusement as my unsuspecting guild members climbed onto the glaciers that now dotted the lake. I shivered as I felt a powerful and very angry water dragon racing towards the surface. I quickly cloaked myself as he broke the surface, roaring in fury. I could almost read his mind. He wanted to know what inferior life form dared to wake him up so violently. The water dragon was beautiful. He had a long slender body like a snake and moved as if he had no bones in his body. He was covered in fiery red scales that shone brightly as if they were making their own light. He had long, sharp dark brown horns right behind his ears. His orange eyes immediately locked onto my guild members. He roared angrily at them. I whistled quietly as I saw how large and sharp his teeth looked.
Landon, being the annoying being that he is, used his summoning skill and brought forth one of his familiars. Xana did the same. I kept my eyes peeled for Yami and Gabriel. To be completely honest, I was more worried about Gabriel than I was about Yami. He was an Assassin. He specialized in remaining completely hidden, waiting for one moment to snag the victory over his opponent. I couldn't let him have that moment.
Yami rose into the air on her floating cloud. One look in her eyes told me that she hated me. Her bloodlust was coming off her in waves. I laughed at her drenched and shivering form.
"Don't you look ravishing," I teased.
She released a growl and grabbed her staff. I readied myself. This was surely going to be interesting.
