Ch. 21

Arlen

I was scared out of my mind, but more than anything, I was angry. Angry that my precious time was being wasted, angry that the book didn't tell me everything I needed to know, angry that Gabriel had put me into such a predicament, angry that I'd even entertained his blasphemous idea, and angry that I now had to fight some impossible boss all on my own! I was so close to my goal, so close. If that fucking monster hadn't shown up, perhaps I'd be pleasantly giving that bitch Gabriel a taste of my fist.

"I should have finished you off!" I roared into the empty forest.

I watched, practically shitting myself as a gigantic monster emerged from underground. Immediately, I gagged as a smell like no other almost knocked me unconscious. I thought the rotting smell of the undead smelled bad, whatever this monster was made their scent almost pleasant in comparison. I covered my nose as I watched what looked to be a humanoid beast rise out of the earth. Its skin was as black as tar, and large pieces of slime and rotting flesh slid slowly off of its bones and into the forest floor.

Its entire back was covered in sharp, black scales that slinked together creating a sound similar to jingling coins every time it moved. Thick, dirty and long strands of hair hung in tangled clumps from its head, occasionally falling out. As the monster slowly stood to its feet, I couldn't help but notice that it was about as tall as a one-story building. Its arms were thick with rippling muscles, and so were its legs. Slowly, the monster turned to face me, and I gulped nervously.

Its face didn't really look like a face at all. It was basically a black hole with two red glowing dots staring back at me. Large scars covered its chest and I soon noticed that its vulnerable spot was very large, and the bones that wrapped tightly around it were thick and resembled sparking diamonds.

"You....you dare to....awaken me," it slurred. The monster turned to fully face me, and it was then that I noticed the huge club it held in its right hand. If I get hit by him even once, I would die instantly. I discreetly brought up its status screen, growing even more nervous when I saw three question marks in the place where its level was supposed to be. I knew that there was no way I could fight this thing and live to tell about it.

"I'm sorry," I shakily whispered, "I was just passing through."

For some reason, I thought reasoning with this giant monster was possible, but as I hastily dodged the mighty swing of its large club, I realized that talking was not possible.

"Liar!"

Its roar was like thunder, nearly bursting my eardrums and shaking the surrounding trees. The swing of the boss was so powerful that it shook the ground and created small craters where its club landed. His red glowing eyes glazed with rage as he tried, again and again, to crush me with his club. I had no method of attack to combat this monstrous beast. Since I knew I couldn't fight, I knew I had to run, so I did just that. I took off running in a random direction, hoping to put as much distance between myself and the monster as I could, but his long legs and athletic body meant that catching me was child's play, so I took to the air. Fleeing was the only possible chance I had at living through this encounter, but it would seem that I was destined here to die as well.

Faster than I would have ever thought possible, I was snatched out of the air. I shouted and yelled to be put down, but the monster only squeezed. I screamed in terrible agony as he snapped my bones as if they were twigs.

"This is what you get," he sneered as she glared down at me.

I gasped for air as my lungs were crushed. So this is how I would die here on this planet. Just as soon as I started living my life here on this planet, it would be this monster that takes it away from me. Why? What had I done so wrong to be dealt such a shitty hand?
