Ch. 11
Arlen
A method of attack, I had to figure out how I wanted to attack all the while closing in on the goblin's location. The upstairs was just as bad as downstairs, and we all had to walk very slowly as to not alert anyone or anything of our presence. The upstairs led to a very large sitting area as well as two hallways that led to other rooms. Some of the doors were broken while some of the others were still intact.
The only spells I'd been using so far had been elemental spells, but I wondered if, as a Caster, if I could use spells that weren't of the elements. Using fire here could easily spell disaster, and if the fire got to out of control, I wouldn't be strong enough to rein it all in, same with water. I wasn't trying to tear the place down with earth magic. Air could work, but I wanted to explore other possibilities. Helen said that she and Casper had my back, so why not go all out?
I wondered if there were other spells I could use like the shield I used back when Casper and I collected those killer plants. I looked up and suddenly became aware that the three of us had stumbled into a room with three sleeping goblins. Me, being the clumsy person I am, tripped over a piece of broken furniture and ended up waking up the three of them. The goblins looked exactly like I'd pictured them. They were short with deformed faces and sharp teeth that stuck out of their mouth in every direction. They had long, floppy ears and yellow eyes that stared back at me with hatred.
"Elf scum," one of the goblins slurred.
I took a few steps back, overcome with fear. Seeming to sense my hesitation, the goblin roared loudly and charged at me, closely followed by his comrades. I quickly backed away and raised my staff. I swung it in a wide arc and with a large burst of air, the goblins went flying. I blinked rapidly, shocked at what I'd done.
The goblins were quickly recovering from my attack, so I quickly composed myself. What was I supposed to do next?! Air attacks alone won't kill them.
My eyes widened when I remembered my mana arrows. Immediately, I raised my staff into the air and in under a second, I sent a hail of arrows made from my mana onto the goblins. I stopped as soon as it got quiet, and when the dust settled, I saw that the goblins were dead. A part of me was joyous that I managed to kill them by myself, but there was another part of me that felt guilty for killing them. Sighing, I clasped my hands together and prayed for them. Afterward, I collected any valuables they had.
Helen, having noticed the shift in my mood, pulled me into a hug and rubbed my head. My eyes were wide with surprise; Helen had never shown such affection towards me.
"It's okay," Helen said, "I felt the same way after my first kill, but this is how we survive."
With a nod, I cleaned up the tears that had escaped and pulled away. Casper patted my head and smiled cutely.
"Do you want to continue?" Helen asked.
I nodded, "Yes, I have to get used to this, but what do we do with the bodies?"
"Don't worry about them, there are a lot of priests here, priests are able to release souls from the dead, and when that happens, the bodies return to the earth."
Nodding, I stepped behind Casper and Helen and pulled out my spell book, looking over my newly acquired spells. I flipped through the pages, pausing when I saw an active spell called Life Drain. The title basically told me what the spell consisted of, draining the life out of your opponents. There were also sells for binding your opponent with ropes made from mana and spells that confused opponents or sent them into a deep sleep. I, once again, became excited and eager to use them in battle.
