Chapter 2
Arlen
I could feel someone running their hands through my hair, humming softly as they did so. I listened, trying to see if I could recognize the song, but to no avail. Slowly, I opened my eyes and pink orbs were the first thing I saw. The humming stopped as the girl stared down at me in slight surprise.
"Finally," she breathed, "You're awake. I was beginning to worry."
I blinked stupidly, not knowing how to respond. For a moment, my mind remained blank, and then, without warning, memories of what happened just moments before rushed into my brain. I sat up with a startled gasp, grabbing at my neck. I breathing came out in ragged breaths as I looked around me, hoping to find something that I recognized. If I was still alive after getting stabbed in the neck, I was supposed to be in the hospital with a very painful wound, but here I sat, in the middle of the forest without a single clue as to why I was here.
I whipped my head around to stare at the girl, hoping for answers, but instead, she sent me a look of pity.
"It seems as if you're one of the ones who remember their death," she whispered.
I furrowed my eyes at her as I slowly shook my head. I wasn't dead.
"Look around you," she said quietly, "Surely you recognize that this place isn't the world in which you originated."
As soon as those words were out of her mouth, I noticed her tall, black ears that were downcast in sadness. Her bushy tail flicked back and forth as she sat on her legs. Surely this is a joke, I mean, people with animal ears only existed in anime! I reached for my head, sighing softly in relief when all I felt was my hair. I didn't have a tail either.
The girl giggled softly and held up a small mirror. I let out a squawk of surprise when I saw my appearance. Here I thought I was at least a little normal! Grabbing the mirror, I stared at the unknown teenage boy in shock, unable to believe that the person that I was seeing was me. I turned my head to the side, my expression being one of disbelief. Sure enough, the man in the mirror gave me the same look and copied my actions.
This couldn't be me. I turned my face again and grabbed at one of the long, pointed ears that stuck out of my deep blue hair. The boy, once again, mirrored my actions, and I could feel myself touching my ear. I moved the mirror closer to my face, rubbing the dark blue oval that rested on my forehead. Why's that there? Unsurprisingly, my eyes were the same dark blue as my hair. I was a little saddened to see that I didn't have my mother's forest green eyes. That was one of the few things that I loved most about myself. I inhaled a breath and laughed softly as it finally dawned on me what was happening.
"I'm dreaming, aren't I?" I chuckled as I stared at the fox-eared girl. She sent me a look that said she was less than impressed before crawling over and grabbing my ear, pinching it painfully with her sharp nails.
"Ow!" I cried as I grabbed my ear, staring at the brutish girl in slight fear.
She smirked, "Still think you're dreaming?"
She sat back on the ground with a sigh.
"You died in your previous world that is why you are here, elf. You were given another shot at life by whoever decides all this. I didn't believe it at first either." She hummed as she stared up at the sky.
I shook my head in denial as my eyes burned with the threat of tears.
"But my mom!" I whispered shakily as I wiped my cheeks, "I can't leave without apologizing to mom! I have to go back! How do I get back?!"
The girl turned and glared harshly at me.
"There is no going back, elf, and even if you were to go back, the world you knew would have completely changed. A reincarnation happens once every a hundred years. That means that it's been a hundred years since your death. It may feel like yesterday, but I tell you the truth, it was not."
Her harsh glare suddenly turned sad.
"There is a good chance your mother and everyone you once knew is no longer a part of that world. There would be nothing to go back to. I'm sorry."
I shook my head angrily.
"No! I don't believe that! You could only be saying that to stop me from going back!" I screamed, desperate for her to be wrong. There was no way that she was right, she couldn't be! I could still remember that blade piercing my neck and feeling the warmth of my blood as it oozed from my wound. No way had it been a hundred years since then!
"You damn stupid elf!" the girl growled. Sanding up from her position on the ground, she stomped over to me and glared harshly down at me. I gulped in fear.
"Why would I lie to you?" she screamed, "I have no reason to lie to you! Hell, I don't even know you, what would I gain from lying to a complete stranger?! Stop you from going back? Unlike you, I have no memories from my past life, which means that I have no desire to return to wherever world you came from!"
She turned away, her pink eyes glistening with tears.
"If I was such a cruel woman, I would have left you here and let the beasts feed on your naked body instead of helping you and clothing you!"
She ripped open her bag and rummaged through it, pulling out what looked to be a ring. She tossed it at my feet with another glare.
"And I would have stolen that!"
She stomped off, leaving me alone in a completely foreign place. I was instantly wracked with guilt. If my mother were here now, she would be chastising me for being so rude and demanding that I apologize. I placed the deep blue ring on my index finger, running my thumb over the blue stone that was nestled in it. Why is everything so blue?
My mind reverted back to the fox girl. She was correct; there wasn't really a reason for her to lie to me. And if I could go back, there was a good chance that my friends and family wouldn't accept me with open arms. I was dead, and in my world, no one came back from death. Instead of accusing the fox girl, I should be thanking her for being there when I woke up and protecting me. And I should really ask for her name, calling her fox girl is rude.
I played with the hem of my shirt, suddenly feeling very embarrassed and shy.
Ugh, just go and get it over with, you wimp!
Standing up, I followed where she angry woman had stomped off.
