Cassius and Murphy trekked through the forest looking for a place to rest it had been exactly one week since Murphy was banished. Cassi couldn't find it in herself to regret joining him. He's her best friend after all. He was her family. Family comes first.

"Hey," Murphy nudged her side. "Remember when we first met?"

Cassius threw her head back in laughter. "Oh geez. Of course I do."

Wells chased Cassius through the halls of the Ark. She had accused him of being a wet sponge when he refused to play tag with her then ran off with his ID badge.

"Cassius! Give it back or I'm gonna tell!"

Cassius slowed to a stop. She turned and pouted at Wells. "Oh come on. You're such a buzz kill. Stop being such a big baby."

As she turned to keep walking she bumped right into somebody. It was some scrawny kid with messy brown hair and mischief in his eyes. Cassius could tell that he had a lot going on.

"Hey. You're going to be my new best friend. Wells is a crybaby, and you look like you have daddy issues, which is something we can bond over."

The boy looked at her with a bewildered expression. Here was some unknown girl with wild hair and an obvious attitude problem asking to be his friend. He had never had a friend before.

Cassius spoke up again at his hesitance. "Wanna go bother old people?"

The boy laughed in shock. "Uh, yeah! Sure!"

Cassi wrapped her arm around his shoulders and stuck her tongue out at Wells and walking away.

    "So what's your name, kid?"

"Oh," he smiled up her. She was slightly taller than him. "My name is John Murphy, but everyone just calls me Murphy."

"I'll call you whatever the hell I want, Johnny boy," she snorted. "My name is Cassius Kane, but  me Cassius." She slightly mocked him.

She abruptly stopped walking causing Murphy to stumble at the suddenness. "We're gonna best friends forever and ever. So long that you're gonna be my maid of honor when I marry Wells. So long that when we're reincarnated as trees we'll grow right next to each other. So long that when we die and get sent off to space our dead bodies will be holding hands. Promise me."

Murphy stared at her with wide eyes. "You're intense."

     "You have to promise."

"I just met you! Besides, if you want us to last that long why don't you just marry me?"

Cassius gave an exasperated sigh. "Marriage is different. We'd just stop loving each other after twenty years. You would get some hot young lover and I'd have to pretend like I don't know."

"Where do you come up with these things?"

"My grandma told me," she answered blankly. "Now promise me, or I'll punch you in the face."

Murphy threw his hands up in surrender. "Okay, okay! I promise we'll be best friends forever and ever even after we die and whatever you said. Now let's go bother old people like we were supposed to five minutes ago."

Cassius smiled brightly at him and dragged him by the hand to where her grandmother tends to her trees. "Sweet! Come on!"

Murphy followed in suit with a small smile on his face. "You scare me," he muttered.

Cassius' happy laugh echoed throughout the halls of the ark.

*******

Cas and Murphy laughed loudly at the memory.

"Gosh, you were such a wimp and I had no filter," Cassius giggled.

Murphy's whole body shook with laughter. "Me a wimp? You were so intense! You scared the shit out of me. You still do sometimes! Hell, I wanted to run the other way."

"Well aren't you glad you didn't?"

"Yeah," Murphy snorted. "You probably would've attacked me and kept me in your closet for safe keeping."

Cassi choked out a laugh. "Oh please! You kept yourself in a closet for safe keeping. When are you coming out?"

Murphy gave her a look. "I'm not gay, Cassius."

Cassius howled in laughter once she saw his face. "Okay, sure," she snorted.

Murphy wasn't having it. "Come on, Cassi. I'm serious."

Cassius leaned against a tree trying to contain her laughter. Murphy rolled his eyes at her and grabbed her arm. He pulled her body flush against his then backed the giggling girl into the tree.

    "Cassius."

Cassius looked up noticing how close the two were. Murphy's hand rested on her lower back as they stood chest to chest. His breathing became heavier as he stared into his best friend's eyes. Cassius was honestly a little freaked out.

"Okay," she breathed out. "I believe you, John. Now back the fuck up. Your breath stinks."

Murphy laughed and took a few steps back. He had just opened his mouth to say something when he suddenly dropped. Cassius let out a yell of surprise, and looming over Murphy's unconscious body was a grounder.
