Twenty-three: Death and Escape

Obi-Wan stood up, his teeth grit. "Cody, I don't want to hurt you."
Cody gave him a murderous look.
"You raped the commander, General."
Obi-Wan studied his feet.
"I know."
Cody growled menacingly.
" Cody, no. You've hurt me enough, and if the Council finds out, they'll have you discarded. You need to stand back. I won't breathe a word if you'll not hurt me again. "
The clone narrowed his eyes. "I don't believe you," he said.
"Then don't believe me. And go away. We're almost back to Coruscant."
Cody walked over to his general and patted him on the shoulder. "Sorry, sir."
Obi-Wan laughed. "It's quite alright, Cody. Now, go and check on Ahsoka. I believe I owe her an apology."

Bane helped her up into the hole, then they crawled near-silently down the tunnel. Bane had slid the panel back into place.
They crawled for at least half an hour when Bane stopped
"It stinks in here, Bane," Ahsoka said, wincing as the cold metal walls brushed her bare skin.
"Cad," he said.
" What? "
"Call me Cad. It's been more than a month of you calling me 'Bane'. Call me by my first name. It'll be like we're friends."
Ahsoka managed not to look skeptical as she said, "You're a wanted criminal."
"From today on out, it looks 'ike you are too," Cad said.
"That's true," Ahsoka admitted.
They sat in silence for a while.
"Why aren't we moving?" Ahsoka finally asked.
Cad had his eyes closed and his hat over his face.
"We're a-waiting for the ship to stop."
"Oh."

* * *
Ahsoka was getting very bored as time dragged on. Cad was resting but wasn't asleep, and he didn't seem to want to talk either.
"Cad," she said.
" Mmm? "
"It's cold."
Cad lifted the brim of his hat to look at her. "If all you do is complain, no one is going to like you."
" You like me, " Ahsoka said enthusiastically.
"What makes you say that?"
" Well, " Ahsoka began. "You let me stay on your ship without killing me, and you took me on one of your runs."
Cad tipped his hat back down. "You really think I'd kill you if I didn't like you?"
Ahsoka sighed. "Well, I can't be sure."
Cad chuckled and pulled her near to him, letting her nestle into his side.
"Nah, you were right."
