This is set after my one shot where Karen and Ted get divorced and now Mike, Nancy and Holly have to meet their new step siblings. (of course Mike brings along El for support)

"Mike."

"Mike." El exclaimed, drawing the attention of the freckle faced boy beside her. "Sorry El I was just.... I dunno" he sighed as he squeezed her hand. "You're nervous. Breathe, Mike. Breathe." At El's words, Mike's airways seemed to magically open and he was finally able to breathe deeply, despite his nerves. 6 months ago his father had announced his engagement to some.... woman. And she had children. He had never met the kids, but he knew they were twins his age, Christopher and Heather. And even though he knew that it was better this way, his parents were never happy and being together was toxic for them and for Nancy, Holly and himself, he couldn't help but wish that he still had his family. All in one house, because no matter how bad it got, they were still together.

"We're here." Nancy announced, pulling him out of his thoughts. He looked outside to see a two story house, not too much different from his own. Nancy, Holly and Jonathan (who had come to support Nancy) all filed out of the car. He saw the front door open and his father step out, followed by someone that could only be his future step-mother. He legs jittered, and he took a deep breath before reaching for the door handle. El reached out and placed her hand on his, stopping him. He jumped, he was so deep in thought he'd forgotten she was beside him. "Look at me, Mike" He took another deep breath and looked down into her hazel eyes. Immediately he could feel his stress subsiding. It always happened when he looked at her. He found something in her eyes that made his soul whole. Just one look at her and he was reminded. "This is hard Mike. I know it is. I never had a proper family, and now I do, and I can't imagine what it would be like for that to all fall apart again. It's okay that you're scared. It's okay that you're sad. But I'm always gonna be here okay? Always. I'm gonna walk out there hand in hand with you, and I'm gonna meet my future step-siblings in law. I'm gonna be there." That was enough for a few tears to spill down Mike's cheeks and for him to pull her into a bone-crushing hug. He pulled away and leant his forehead against hers, breathing deeply. "I love you." He murmured squeezing her hand. "And I- I promise you that nothing like this is gonna happen to us. There's never gonna be a second person for me, and I'll never treat you like my dad treated my mom. Our family is never gonna go through this, I promise you." El smiled at him and kissed him slowly. "I know. I love you too much for that to happen." She murmured as she pulled away. He grinned at her as she jumped out of the car, running round to his side. He stepped out and quickly grabbed her hand, interlacing their fingers as they walked towards the mix-matched family that had gathered on the front lawn.

"Dad." Mike greeted as his father turned to him. "Good to see you Mike." Ted replied as he slapped his shoulder. "You too Jane." He said as he turned to El. She just smiled thinly back at him. They all knew the polite greeting was just a filter for Ted's true feelings about his son's girlfriend. Mike turned to the blonde woman that stood next to his father. "Um- hi. I'm guessing you're Bec?" He stated awkwardly, looking down at the much shorter woman. She smiled warmly. "I am. Mike sweetie, it's so lovely to meet you. I can't wait for us all to become a family!" She remarked as she pulled him into a awkward hug. He pulled away quickly and scratched the back of his head. "Yeah me too. Uh, this is my girlfriend, Jane, but we all call her El. She's pretty much with me 24/7, so I thought it would be worthwhile for you guys to meet." Bec turned to El, warm smile still on her face. "It's lovely to meet you too! You are gorgeous sweetie. You two make a very nice couple." El smiled back at her. She liked this woman. "It's so nice to meet you! And thanks." She replied, smiling up at Mike. Ted clapped his hands together. "Welp, everyone else is already inside so we better get in there!" El squeezed Mike's hand as they stepped through the front door.

"Heather, Chris, come over here!" Bec exclaimed as she walked into the living room. They walked over, all blonde hair and blue eyes and tan skin, quite the opposite of their future brother. "Hey Mike!" Chris greeted extending his hand and shaking Mike's. "I'm Chris, and this is Heather." He exclaimed, pointing at the girl beside him. "Nice to meet you." She replied. The awkwardness was painfully evident. El gave Mike a tiny shove forwards. (Encouragement, of course) Mike chuckled and stepped forwards. "Hey. I think we can all agree this is very awkward and... weird. But we're gonna be a family so, I want you guys to be my siblings as much as Nancy and Holly are." He said, gesturing to his sisters. Smiles appeared on Heather and Chris's faces. "I'm so glad to hear you say that. To be honest we were..... hesitant to meet you. Your dad said you can be.... reserved." Heather said carefully. "Anything Ted says should be taken with a grain of salt. The man is kind of a jackass. No offence since he's gonna be your step-dad and all that." El scoffed, stepping forwards and gesturing to the man that had settled himself onto a Lay-Z-Boy that looked suspiciously similar to the one at the Wheeler residence. Mike smirked at his girlfriend and turned to his siblings (Jesus, that sounds weird) "This is Jane, but we call her El. She's my girlfriend." Heather and Chris smiled at her. "I hope we can be friends El, cause I'm gonna need someone to bitch to about my brothers. And you'll understand cause you're dating one." El laughed at that. "I'm your girl then. You know Mike can't go to sleep unless he listens to Mozart for at least a half hour beforehand?" El exclaimed as she linked arms with Heather and the other girl laughed. "Chris does a similar thing but....." her voice trailed off as the two walked upstairs. Chris turned to Mike. "I heard you're a fellow Star Wars fanatic. Wanna go
watch?" Mike beamed at his future brother. "Is that even a question?"

The blending of the Wheelers and the Conleys turned out to be easy. Heather and El quickly became close friends, and as soon as Heather met Max the three became an inseparable trio. Turns out Chris and Mike were similar in a lot of ways, and the two found themselves hanging out outside of family obligations. Sometimes Chris and Heather even came to hang out with the party as a whole. Although it was still hard for Mike to see his family split down the middle, his new one was shaping up to be pretty good.

And he had El. He'll always have El.
