Mike wasn't supposed to spend the night at the cabin but the massive snowstorm meant that there was no way he was going to be able to get home. After having called his mother to let her know he would have to stay there, he and El set up blankets and cushions on the floor and the couch whilst Hopper made dinner. The three of them laughed and talked as they ate. After Mike forgave him, he and Hopper formed a bond. To be honest, he was the closest thing to a father to Mike and he saw him as a father figure. Their bond also made El super happy as her two favourite people got along. They also both would die to protect Eleven, so there was that.

After dinner, El and Mike settled down to watch a movie. After reiterating that one was to sleep on the couch and the other on the mattress on the floor, NOT together, Hopper went off to bed early, as he had to wake up at 4am for the early shift.

Mike and El watched movie after movie until it was nearing 2am and they were both super tired. Mike insisted El should have the mattress, as it was more comfortable. He kissed her goodnight and then settled down on the couch, soon falling asleep.

He woke with a start, sitting up abruptly. He kept on having the same dream. El never coming back from closing the gate, him losing her, again. He was drenched in sweat and shaking. He didn't want to worry El with his nightmares so he hadn't told her he'd been having them, but staring at her peacefully sleeping made him realise he needed her. Still shaking, he crawled off the couch and knelt beside the mattress. He touched her shoulder "El?" he murmured. She sat up suddenly. She was a light sleeper and could be woken up by someone breathing too loud. She looked into his eyes and saw the pain, and the tears. She immediately embraced him, pulling him onto the mattress. He cried into her shoulder, hugging her waist tightly. He really needed this, the assurance that she was right here. "It's okay Mike. I'm here. I always will be." She whispered as she pulled back, cupping his face and kissing him passionately. He melted into the kiss. Still kissing her, he lay down and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close. They stayed like this for a bit before he pulled back, tucking a stray curl behind her ear. She smiled softly at him, he could see her cheeks were tinted pink, even in the darkness. He buried his head in her shoulder. "thank you" he said quietly, muffled by her shoulder. "anytime."
