"So," May sat down next to Peter on his bed, handing him another ice-pack. "Are you finally telling me what happened?"

"It was just," Peter had a moment of silence, thinking of a good excuse to cover it, but ended up telling her anyway. "Michelle got attacked."

"And you just went in to protect her? On your own?" May went into overprotective 'mother' mode, covering her mouth with her hand in shock as she looked down at her nephew. Her eyes hone worried behind her glasses.

"I had to. She couldn't protect herself."

"So you just went in there and tried to save her?" May started to freak out, while Peter just let out a sigh and continued to cure his own bruises.

"I couldn't just watch." He turned away, as tears gathered in May's eyes, looking at him.

"You could get a teacher, a friend, someone else to help you! Why didn't you just walk away?! I told you to walk away from danger-"

"Because I love her!" Peter's sudden interruption had May shocked. She sat back on Peter's bed, as a tear dropped down Peter's face.

Moments of silence fell, as May sighed. Peter always got himself in trouble, like some sort of fight, whether it was with a couple of school bullies or a mad scientist who sold deadly weapons. It worried her sick, but she knew she couldn't do anything to hold him back; this was simply who he was. And even though she was proud, she just wished her boy would take care of himself more.

May leaned in and wrapped her arms around her nephew. He leaned into her touch, the way he always did. May leaned her chin on his curls, closing her eyes while rubbing Peter's back. They stayed like that for a while, both just enjoying each other's presence.

After what felt like an eternity, Peter finally gathered all his emotions together and spoke up again.

"You can't just walk away from someone you love. You know that."

A small sigh left May's mouth, as Peter pulled away to look her in the eye. May smiled sadly, she knew what he meant. She nodded, giving him one last kiss on the forehead before standing up from the bed.

"Take care of those bruises, wouldn't want to have a ruined face when you're asking her out,"

Peter's head shot up.

"How did you-" he started, but May pressed a finger to her lips to silence him.

"Mother's instinct," she said with a wink, smiling at him and walking out the door. Peter flopped down on his bed. He ran a hand down his face, thinking about how messed up his life had gotten since that day, a day that truly changed his life.

He stood up, deciding to get to bed early today, tomorrow he'd be going to the compound after school and he already knew he wouldn't go to bed early then. His exhaustion won the fight against his fears (to ask out a girl, it's freaking stressful!), and he quickly fell asleep.

"Okay, but how should I ask her?" Peter was pacing around his room at the compound, stressing his head off.

"Man, relax a bit," Harley said, sitting comfortably on the couch with his croissant. "Just ask her to go out with you. You'll be fine."

"But what if she says n-" Peter rambled on, until Harley let out a dramatic sigh, causing the boy to stop talking.

"Look, dude, she's your girlfriend," the older boy stood up from his comfortable seat, walked over to Peter and lay his hands on Peter's shoulders. "She loves you, so why the heck would she say no?"
