Again, I rode with Lukas and Kaylee. This time, the music was at a normal level, and they talked normally. Sometimes they would get my opinions on things, but they weren't talking about anything that interesting.
I looked out the window again, staring at the sunset that rose over the horizon. It was beautiful. The windows were open a crack, so I could hear the wind and feel it on my face.
I had eventually dozed off, when Kaylee started to shake my shoulder.
"Come on, we're here.", She said a little smile on her face.
"Okay.", I mumbled, unbuckling my seat belt.
I got out of the car, stretching my legs. I felt the warm air across my face. I stood, staring at the sunset reflecting off of the huge lake in front of me. I stared, my eyes wide. Kaylee grabbed my hand, laughing, pulling me toward the lake. I looked behind me, seeing Lukas with a frown. As soon as he noticed I was there, he smiled at me.
I was pulled to the edge of the lake, with rocks scattered everywhere. This place was a sight for sore eyes. The lake was huge, and it had trees surrounding the whole area. I started to smile, and it wouldn't go away. Kaylee ran over to Anahi, Nairi, Sam, and Harold as they walked to the edge. Harold was beaming, talking with Anahi and Nairi, as Sam talked with Kaylee.
I sat on the rocks at the edge of the lake, touching the water with my fingertips. Lukas sat next to me, smiling at the water. His eyes looked glossy, like he was crying, or he was going to cry.
"Pretty, isn't it?", He asked quietly, his voice gentle.
I nodded.
"I should go to quiet places with water more often.", He chuckled, "Going here was your idea, right? Nice choice."
"Thanks.", I responded, turning my head to look at him.
I turned my head toward the others. They were sort of far away like they wanted us to make up, so they were leaving us alone.
"Amanda...", Lukas said softly, "Look at me for a second."
I turned my head to him, confused. He grabbed both of my hands.
"I just... wanted to let you know, that whatever happens between us, it will be okay. I know we've been going through a lot lately, but I want you to know that it's okay, and it's going to be okay.", He massaged the back of my hands with his thumbs.
"I... Okay...", I said silently.
He let go of my hands and touched my cheek with his fingers.
He moved his head in closer to mine and kissed my cheek. I saw Kaylee out of the corner of my eye, smiling.
Maybe after all of this, and throughout all of this, he really did love me.
He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me into a tight hug. I felt my cheeks get warm as I smiled and put my arms around him.
He eventually drooped his arms, and I let go. I grabbed his wrist, and pulled him up, walking him over to the others. I sat down.
"Guys, take off your shoes and socks. Dip your feet in!", Sam said.
Sam had already done it, her feet in the water. I followed in her footsteps. I took off my shoes and socks, dipping my feet in the lukewarm water. I put my hands behind me, leaning back to look at the sky.
I didn't know that any day could be so perfect. This was the best day of my life.
...
We stayed there for almost three hours, talking, watching the sun go down, stargazing, laughing. It was amazing. I felt like those three hours made me and Lukas closer.
We were about to head back up, when Lukas said, "Wait."
We all stopped and turned to look at him. He walked toward me. I felt my heart race. He kneeled down on one knee, grabbing my hand. I put my other hand over my face, which was turning redder by the second.
"Amanda...", His face was placid, calm.
Everyone started to freak out, and cheer.
He began to pull something out of his back pocket. Scissors.
"I can't love you anymore.", He said blatantly.
He quickly opened the scissors and hovered them over the string that connected us. My heart stopped when I heard the snip of the scissors as they ruined my life.
Everyone started screaming and yelling.
He stood up and started to walk away. I felt uncontrollable tears run down my face. Kaylee and Nairi ran over to me and started to speak to me, comfort me. I couldn't hear them, I couldn't hear anything except for I can't love you anymore.
Anahi, Harold, and Sam stood there, paralyzed. Harold reached out his arm, like he wanted to help, but couldn't.
I saw Lukas drive away in his car.
My knees buckled, and I fell to the ground, gripping the grass. I began to sob. I screamed his name, thinking that he could hear me. He couldn't. I stared at the frayed, cut string that now swayed in the wind, a forever memory of times lost. I pulled it close to me. Even though the others couldn't see the string, they could tell what I was doing.
"Let it go...", I heard. Anahi.
I can't. I wanted to say, but my throat was dry, and I felt like my whole body shut down. I held the string close to my chest, crying into the grass.
He said that no matter what, everything would be okay.
I closed my eyes, taking small breaths.
He ruined my life. He broke me. I was broken. I am broken.
