ELYS SIGHS, SITTING on the steps in the lab. Abby was injecting the grounder that had attacked her earlier. Despite him nearly killing her, she couldn't help but feel bad that they were experimenting on him.

Murphy sat down beside her. "I know what you're thinking. Don't feel bad. He attacked you." He says, turning her to face him and looking at her wounds. Her nose was healing but her lip was busted and eye was still swollen. She saw his jaw clench as he looked at her.

Abby sighs, looking at the monitor. "Vital signs are strong. Jackson, seal the chamber."

Jackson nods. He seals the chamber around the grounder and looks up at Abby. "He's ready."

Raven steps up. "Yeah, but are we?"

Murphy stands up, walking over to them. "The guy's a monster..."

Clarke nods. "He's right. We've all been over this. No one WANTS to do this, but the death wave will be here in ten days. Luna's stem cells grafted successfully. The grounder is making Nightblood on his own now. This really is our ONLY hope. If you need a reason, just look at what he did to Elys."

She feels eyes on her face and looks down at the floor.

Murphy groans. "Are we really still talking about it? The black rain's already here. Eighteen people died from it in Arkadia. So if Nightblood can let us walk around in it, I, for one, want to know about it."

Abby sighs and nods. "Okay. Jackson, go ahead."

Jackson nods and turns on the machine. It begins to beep. "500 REM... 850... This is where we'd see symptoms in a non-Nightblood."

Abby looks at the monitor. "BP is 100 over 50. Body temp is over 98.7. Resting comfortably."

"1,000 REM... 1,500..."

"All good."

"2,000 REM. This is the level of black rain."

Elys stands up, walking over to stand next to Murphy to watch the grounder.

Clarke smiles. "Still nothing. It's working."

"2,500."

Suddenly, the grounder wakes up and begins to scream. His skin begins to blister and burn him.

Jackson starts to stop the machine, but Abby says, "Wait."

"No!" Clarke yells, "Turn it off!"

The man screams. "En's sting in! En's sting in!"

"Okay, get him out of there!" Abby yells.

Jackson shuts the machine down and Abby starts toward it. "Wait, it's not safe yet." He says.

The grounder begins to spit up and choke on blood. The machine then flatlines.

"Oh, God..." Elys chokes out, grasping Murphy's hand.
