As I neared the DX after school, I slipped my sunglasses on, which only made it harder for me to see. I had gotten jumped by some Socs during lunch today, and I had avoided Johnny, Pony, and Two-Bit the whole rest of the day, not really wanting to deal with their questions.
I had a back eye, swollen nearly shut, and a big scabbed up section of raw skin at the corner of my eye. They had knocked me down, jumped on top of me, and ground my face into the asphalt. Luckily it was only two of them, so after I had wiggled my way out from under their football player dead-weight bodies, I kicked their butts. At least enough to get away without them following me, they were writhing in pain on the ground.
I had a headache, so I still didn't want to have to put up with their nosy questions, but the real reason I put the sunglasses on was so Dally wouldn't notice and then scream at me. I could have skipped going to the DX altogether, but I know they would have then gotten suspicious and tracked me down and interrogated me until I gave in. I don't even know why I was friends with six guys who worried about me every time I acted slightly out of the ordinary. I was a girl, I couldn't act exactly like them all the time, but whatever.
"Hey, we were just talking about you!" Soda said as I came within earshot.
"That may not be such a good thing," I commented, reminding myself that they wouldn't suspect a thing. My sunglasses and too-long bangs covered all my injuries, and it was sunny out, Steve and Soda had sunglasses on as well.
"Where were you at lunch today?" Johnny asked quietly.
"She probably hooked up with some sleazy Soc in a back alley and had herself a great time, right Tara?" Two-Bit jeered, and I responded dead serious,
"Not on your life." My voice was as cold as my stomach, a hunk of ice forming at the thought of those Socs attacking me in the alley. I hated them like my brother hated.
"Looks like the crabby bug got you right in the rear end," Dally said, looking at me amusedly.
I just rolled my eyes and shook my head as if seriously disappointed in them. Not that they could see the eye roll, but Soda must have implied that, because he asked,
"Was that an eye roll that I just didn't see?" and he abruptly reached out and snatched my sunglasses off my face before I could react.
"Hey!" I shouted, completely forgetting why I was wearing them as I lunged at Sodapop, pissed that someone took my stuff. I wasn't quick enough though, he tossed them to Two-Bit who caught them and then let them slip from his fingers and fall to the pavement.
They were all staring, wide-eyed, and Dally grabbed my chin and roughly turned my head so he could see my face.
"What the hell did you do this time?" he yelled loudly and angrily.
"Are you okay?" Johnny asked timidly, and Pony asked worriedly,
"What happened?"
I knew this was going to happen. "It's a scratch and a bruise. I'm not gonna die," I said sharply, mad that they were so concerned about such a stupid thing. And I was mad that Two-Bit had cracked one of the lenses on my sunglasses, and the other had popped out. He'd busted my sunglasses.
"Why do you always have to go around hurting yourself?!" Dal shouted.
"You think I want to get jumped by Socs every time I turn the corner?! I beat them up, and I'm fine except for a few battle scars. Leave it alone already," I replied angrily, crossing my arms over my chest and leaning against a car, a scowl on my face.
"I can't watch your back every second of the day!" Dallas shouted, everyone else looking on, not daring to say anything.
"You don't have to," I pointed out, my tone still angry.
"You're my sister, no matter how much you don't like it. It's my job!" Dally yelled, sounding like it was my fault that I was related to him.
"You don't do it otherwise," I grumbled, barely loud enough for him to hear.
But he heard me, and his jaw was stiff, his teeth gritted and his eyes two blazing blue flames, his fists clenched at his sides. I swear he was going to throw a punch or something, but he just turned and stalked past, a wave of anger rolling off of him as his leather jacket brushed past me. I heard a crunch as he stepped on my sunglasses, but I didn't care. They were already busted in the first place. They all watched Dally's figure retreating around the corner, and then all eyes turned back to me.
"What?" I demanded, staring pointedly back at them, giving a what-did-I-do half-shrug. Two-Bit then made a funny face, inaudibly changing the subject. I ignored them, fuming inside.
Most times I absolutely hated my brother, and otherwise I just strongly disliked him.
