Blocking Out the Stars

I sat cross-legged on the too-long grass of the lot, growing up around the larger pieces of discarded trash and concealing the smaller items from view.  I plucked up a long blade of grass, pulling it out at the root, and started shredding it into pieces.  I wrapped another shorter, dead piece from underneath around my finger and plucked it out and began tying knots in it until it broke too short to tie anymore knots.  I dropped it onto the pile of mangled vegetation in front of me, and then glanced up.

It was sunset, the sky aflame with vibrant oranges and yellows with tints of red, all blossoming from a blindingly white center and stretching across the sky, fading into deep blue.  All the colors were blended together like a watercolor painting, but so much more vibrant and nowhere near as washed out, giving it an unreal quality of brilliance.  As the blinding white faded near the horizon, the deep blue swallowed up the remaining flames, dousing them with navy that was suddenly spotted with winking white diamonds.  I blinked, and then the sky was black, patterned with shining white specks.

The breeze picked up, the leaves in the trees whispering like faintly rushing water.  I better get home.

I got up and brushed off my jeans and headed for the sidewalk, and as I was walking away from the vacant lot, I saw another shadowed figure standing there, blocking out the stars for a moment before he reluctantly turned and started walking away.  A passing cars headlights illuminated briefly shiny reddish hair and a flash of emerald green eyes.  Ponyboy Curtis.  I smiled faintly to myself, I remember him mentioning something about liking to watch sunsets.

I hadn't intended to watch a sunset, but that's what I ended up doing when I had gone for a walk.  I had never actually watched a sunset before, but it was cool.  I could see how someone like Ponyboy could like them.

I had gone for a walk because Dally was still drunk, or still drinking, from last night when I had gotten home from the DX after school.  I hated being around drunk people, and Dally was never nice when he was drinking, though it's not like he was all that nice when he wasn't either.
