"What's up?" I asked Pony as he came outside, hopping up on the porch railing next to me.
He shrugged and replied, "I should be doing my homework, but I don't feel like it."
"Me too, but I'm not going to," I answered. I never did do my homework, and I never bothered going to detention for not doing it either.
"Yeah, but Dally doesn't care. Darry'll come yell at me any second now," Ponyboy said.
"So long as he doesn't kill you," I said with a laugh. "I don't want to have to bury your body."
Just then, Soda, Steve, and Two-Bit came into the yard. Hearing my kill comment, Soda randomly asked, "Hey Tara, if Pony keeled over right now, would you give him mouth-to-mouth?"
What? I gave Pony a confused look, to see if he knew when his brother had gone crazy, but he didn't notice. He was too busy looking mortified as his face turned a bright shade of red. I looked back at Soda, I did know what he had implied by saying that, but I just replied easily,
"No."
Pony was completely confused, Soda was shocked and smiling, and Two-Bit and Steve were cracking up laughing.
"Why not?" Steve managed to gasp out as he controlled his laughter.
"Cause I don't want to kill him. I don't know how to do CPR, and he has more of a chance of dying than living if I end up doing it wrong," I replied.
They obviously didn't expect me to answer with logic and facts when Soda asked that question in the first place.
Ponyboy was still looking baffled, and I said, "Don't worry, I wouldn't let you die. Darry could save your life," I reassured him.
"Ooooh," Two-Bit jeered.
"I'd let you die though," I told Two-Bit, "and Steve," I added, and after a moment's hesitation, "And probably Soda."
With an evil smile, I jump off the porch, just as Darry yelled through the screen door, "Ponyboy, you've got homework. Soda, come help me make supper."
Dally came into the yard just as Johnny came out of the house, and I called, "See ya later," behind me and started walking home with Dally, and Johnny walked with us.
I had kind of known, or more so suspected, that Ponyboy had a thing for me for a while now, and I guess Soda was just trying to trick him into admitting it, and most likely to see if I felt the same. But I wasn't really sure if I did feel that way.
Pony was a good friend, I enjoyed hanging out with him, plus he didn't have the tendency to get annoying easily like Two-Bit and Steve, and he was at least somewhat on the same level of intelligence as me, unlike pretty much everyone else in the gang.
But did I like like him? I didn't know. I will admit he's kind of cute, but I could also say that half of the guys were cute if I was just being honest. And I didn't have romantic feelings towards any of them, even Pony.
The whole love thing was too damn confusing, that's probably why I had never bothered thinking about it before.
