Dally had just gotten out of the shower and was drying off when the phone rang. He wrapped his towel around his waist and went downstairs to answer it. "Hello."
"Hi, Dally?" Ponyboy asked.
"Yeah, what's up?" Dally asked, wondering how they know his number. He'd never told them, but it was probably in the phone book.
" Well Darry just wanted me to make sure you and Tara were all right, cause we haven't seen you for two days," Ponyboy said, sounding hesitant.
"Oh, yeah. Well...we got in a car accident," Dally said, hesitating himself. He took his time explaining what had happened. not wanting to tell Ponyboy the next part."Some damn Soc smashed into the right front bumper of the truck," Dally said, and Pony interrupted.
"Are you guys all right?" he asked worriedly.
"I am, but Tara hit her head on the dashboard......." Dally trailed off and then took a deep breath, deciding to just tell him all of it. "She fractured her skull, and the doctor put her in an induced coma so it'd heal properly," Dally said, his gut churning nervously. He was met by complete silence from the other end, and he distantly heard Darry and Soda's voices and some rustling before Darry's voice came over the phone.
"What happened?" he asked.
Again Dally explained, feeling guilty because they all knew how much of a crush Ponyboy had on Tara. It had to be him to hear the news first. "We got in a car accident and Tara fractured her skull. The doctor put her in a coma for thirty-six hours so it'll heal."
More background noises, and then Darry asked, "What hospital is she at? The guys want to come visit."
"She's at our house," Dally said. None of the guys knew where he lived, he hadn't told them even though he bought the house almost a month ago. "The house by the lot that was for sale for a few years, on the corner of the block," Dally described their house.
"All right. It'll just be Pony, Johnny, and Two-Bit. Soda and I have to work," Darry said. "You sure you're all right with this?" he added.
"Yeah. Bye."
"Bye," and then Darry hung up first, leaving the dial tone ringing in Dally's ear.
Dally went back upstairs and got dressed, pulling on a clean pair of jeans and a rumpled blue T-shirt. He checked on Tara, she was still asleep in the same position as the night before. Dally went downstairs and turned on the T.V.
At quarter to noon, there was a knock on the door. Dally opened the door to see Two-Bit, Pony, and Johnny standing there. He stepped to the side so they could come in, and Two-Bit commented,
"Wow, your house is cleaner than mine," before hopping over the back of the couch and plopping in front of the T.V., starting to flip through the channels. Dally didn't say anything, he wasn't surprised that Two-Bit treated his house just like the Curtis's and his own.
Johnny and Ponyboy were standing in the hallway, awkwardly glancing around.
Two-Bit was right, the house was messy, but cleaner than his and the Curtis's, though there was only two people living here rather than six or seven, and neither one of them was Two-Bit Matthews.
"Where's Tara?" Pony asked quietly, and Two-Bit jumped up from the couch and bounded over to them, saying,
"Yeah, I want to see how girly her room really is."
