"So then, you multiply that by all of that and you will find what x is," I explained to Brooklyn as I caught up on the latest Modern Family episode. "Do you get it?"
"I think so," he said slowly as he copied something down into his book. "Thanks." He flashed me a smile before getting back to his work.
It was mad to think that I had only met him three weeks ago. I felt like we had known each other for years. We had clicked as soon as we had met and were instantly friends. We had fallen into a routine of him coming over to mine after school where I would help him with his maths (I had passed two years ago and finished my A level course, so I was all set) or we would just watch TV together. I enjoyed spending time with him; it felt completely different form spending time with any of my other friends.
There was just something about him, which I was yet to find, which made him intriguing. Every time I spent time with him, I wanted to find out more about him. He was completely different to anyone I knew.
"So," Brooklyn said as he sat on the sofa next to me. "My parents are beginning to wonder why I am coming home late every night."
"Well, what are you telling them?" I asked with a smirk on my face.
"Only that this amazingly brilliant girl is helping me with my maths," he answered. "They want to meet you."
"I cannot meet your parents," I said as I panicked. I quickly got up and went into the kitchen. "I just can't. I will panick and I won't know what to say; it will be awful. They don't really want to meet me do they?"
"They're adamant about it," he told me with a sorry look on his face. "I really tried to put them off but it didn't work." He paused for a second before continuing. "This is the first time I've lived a fairly normal life without being dragged from place to place. We're not moving for the next three years so I can finish my education. I think they are trying to mske me feel normal."
"When?" I asked after a few seconds. "When will I have to meet them?"
"I was thinking this weekend?" he said slowly.
And so, in just 72 hours I would have to go through the worst experience of my life. I mean, guessing it would go badly - which nearly everything did for me.
Before I could say anything else to him though I heard the familiar sound of my mother's heels walking down the hall right towards the kitchen.
I hadn't told her that I was helping Brooklyn every day after school - in fact, I hadn't even mentioned him more than once to her. It wasn't that I didn't want to, I just didn't know how she would take it. I wasn't sure whether she would mind or not.
However, she had arrived in the kitchen before I could say another word. "I thought we could have a family dinner tonight." She said as she came into the kitchen carrying two bags full of shopping. She hadn't even noticed Brooklyn. "I thought it would be nice to see everyone together for once. Will you get hold of your brothers and tell them about it."
"Yeah, that's fine," I said slowly. "Mum, this is my friend Brooklyn. Brooklyn, this is my mum."
"Now, I know that you might be shy but there is no need for you to hide it from me. I know he's more than your friend; I've heard the way you talk to him on the phone and the way you talk about him to Evie." She said nonchantly as she packed away the shopping. "I don't mind at all though. As long as your not up to anything you shouldn't be then carry on."
I grabbed Brooklyn's hand and pulled him out of the room as quickly as I could. I could feel myself getting hotter and hotter but I carried on walking until I was at the front door.
Before I said anything I looked up and saw that he was looking at me with a grin on his face. "So, you talk about me to Evie, do you? What do you say about me then?"
"Ignore everything she just said, it is all lies," I said quickly even though some of it wasn't. I really need soundproof doors. "She made it all up, I promise you." I grabbed his bag and shoved it into his arms. "I will see you whenever I see you." I shut the door in his face before he could say anything else and ran up to my room, where I planned to stay forever.
