We never do seem to get a break, do we? No, the answer is always no. We never seem to get a calm day, or week even ever. That just seems to be the normal now.
Yet people going missing seemed to be just as normal as a day with a little bit of chaos in it. That is our sad reality as we now have to pack up and move or risk dying as a whole.
Speaking of which, I walked through the city, crossbow in hands and Mark next to me. We hadn't said a word to each other since we'd left the base.
I hadn't spoken to anyone since Echo's outburst in the base, maybe that was for the best though. Maybe she was right, that we kept it quiet because we were selfish.
But that couldn't be it, could it? Perhaps with everything going on, self preservation was for the best. But we needed each other to keep on going. Of course Echo would never be the person to admit that.
I was ready to be the person to admit it. We kept it a secret because the rest of the group would have panicked. Bella's a little kid with too much going on to take that on, Lynne would have been set off by it, Lisa, I bet would be able to handle it, Jinxx not so much.
The point being that what we did was to protect them. All of them.
"Is this the place?" Mark asks, bringing me out of my thoughts. I looked up, looking to the building that I remember Caleb circling on the map.
I don't say anything, but I nod my head to him before walking ahead and to the entrance to the large building. Mark sighs and follows after me as we walk up the ramp and to the first lot, which had a few cars around.
"You take the ones on the right and I'll take the ones on the left?" He asks and I nod, walking off to the right with my crossbow, shooting down a walker that stood by a car. It dropped to the floor and I pulled out the arrow.
Slowly, I wiped the dust off of the driver side window and stood with no emotion as a walker on the inside of the car slammed on the window. Pulling on the handle, I was surprised when the door opened and the walker reached its arms towards me.
Taking a step back, I pull out my hunting knife and plunge it into the walker's head. The walker falls limp in the seat, the seat belt keeping the body in place. I reach over the body and push down the button, the seat belt releasing and making the walker fall to my feet.
The gas gage reads empty, making me growl a bit as I look to the back seat and smirk as I pull out an unopened water bottle. Stepping back, I close the door to the car and open the water bottle, taking a sip before slipping it into my backpack.
"Luna! I got one." I hear Mark call and I look over to see that he had a car turned on and working. Not even a smile came to me as I walked over to him.
It was a truck, not mine of course, the blue paint must have been put on just before everything happened because the truck looked good. Gently, I ran my hand along the hood of the car as Mark turned it off and got out, closing the door behind him.
"It's okay to cry you know." He says and I look to him in a bit of confusion. "With everything that happened I know you haven't had the chance to actually let anything out." He says, walking up to me and placing his hands on my arms.
I looked to him before nodding and walking past him. "There'll be time for that. . .after everything settles down."
