Tracker, fighter, hunter, survivor. Those are all the things I am. But effective? That was the one I wasn't.
I was scrambling frantically around looking for a clue or some kind of sign telling me where this missing girl was, but it was hopeless. Guess I have to think like Bella. Approaching the window, I adjust my spear and leap onto the ground. I land in a tangle of bushes growling as the sharp tendrils sliced my skin.
Pushing out into the open, I spot a torn piece of fabric caught on a bramble.
"Find anything?' Luna comes up beside me, "Really though, I hope it was worth jumping out the window."
I shove the piece of fabric in her face. She takes it, examines it and yells, "It's Bella's!"
"You found her?" Lynne skids around the corner of the house and runs over to us.
"Not exactly." I say handing her the fabric.
"Oh, Bella!" Lynne drops to her knees clutching the torn scrap tightly.
"Don't worry," I say pulling her to her feet, "We're gonna find her." I scan the area for any other signs of the missing girl, but all I see are trees and bushes.
"Great, looks like we're gonna do things the old fashioned way." Approaching the woods, I draw out my spear and cut away some of the low hanging shrubbery. A knife would be better honestly, but I prefer the comfort that battered piece of wood and metal brought me. I call out softly, "Bella?" "Bella!"
There's no reply.
Pressing forward I make sure to take in every aspect of the forest, every tree, every bush, every blade of grass.
"Damn it Bella." I hiss. "Alright Lynne, Luna. I have a plan, but it's crazy and we could possibly end up dead."
Luna raises an eyebrow.
"We're not gonna find Bella, so instead, let's have Bella find us."
"What the hell are you talking about?" Lynne says walking over to me.
"Luna, you're gonna pretend to attack us. Don't say anything though, that will ruin our plan."
Luna opens her mouth to object but I speak faster.
"Lynne. You and I are gonna scream so loud, people and walkers for miles are sure to hear us."
"This is insane Echo!" Lynne whispers, "How do you know Bella will find us!"
I smile, "Because she loves you Lynne, despite wanting to run away, if you were in danger I can guarantee she'll come running back, you'll see."
Lynne looks at the ground, "I don't know Echo."
"Trust me." I say placing my hand on her shoulder.
"Ok." She says meeting my gaze, "I trust you."
Lynne and I begin screaming, though it was a little half-hearted at first until a walker came out of the brush. Lynne screams turned real as Luna fired her pistol at it's head. Seeing that this was working, Luna fired a few more shots at the trees all the while, Lynne and I were screaming bloody murder on the ground.
Where the hell is she? I think as another walker leaps at us from behind a tree. I jam my spear through its chest and carry on screaming.
Suddenly, I can hear footsteps crashing through the undergrowth. They're too fast to be walkers, and too loud to be Bella's.
Lynne seems to notice too and stops screaming, her eyes fixated on the swaying brush. Five people leap out of the forest and open fire on the area around us.
"Whoa!" Luna dives towards the ground as bullets fly over our heads.
"Stop!" I scream. The shots cease. I turn my head to take in our attackers and my breath hitches in my throat as my eyes land on the girl in the center.
Bruised, beaten, but very much alive, little Bella's wide eyes are trained on the three people who now lay in front of her on the ground.
"I told you she'd come." I say to Lynne.
"Yeah but who are they?" She shakily points to the other four.
"We're survivors just like you." A smaller girl says stepping forward, "My question is, what are you doing on our land?"
