Josh can't believe his ears right now. Him? Failing? In the same sentence? Not possible.

But yes, it is, and Mr. Hix has the papers to prove it,

"You didn't even finish the first two assignments, so ultimately, if you don't get those to me, they'll be getting zero's, and the best mark you've gotten on a test all year is a 56, Josh."

Josh is repeating his mother's words like a mantra in his head, don't give attitude, don't give attitude, don't give attitude, but God, Josh wouldn't be failing if his teacher didn't suck!

"You know I have problems studying... I'm a very busy person!" He defends in a mumble. "But I studied for this one! What did I get?"

Mr. Hix sighs, picking up his pen and getting to work. Josh sits patiently with a low hum. He actually did study for this one. Aka, read up on Macbeth on Sparknotes.

Don't judge! He was busy designing the homecoming flyers and studying for his math test-- Which is much more important than English!

Mr. Hix shakes his head and sets his pen down, "A 49, Josh. You're failing."

Josh whines as his face starts to burn, "I was busy!" He shouts a bit too loud. His protests fall on deaf ears, as Mr. Hix pulls out a paper,

"At least one of your parents has to sign this, so they know you're failing. I expect this back next week, or I'll be giving them a call."

He also hands Josh a bright yellow flyer for a study group, "I think that would be your best bet, for now." Mr. Hix says.

Josh takes them all numbly. He hadn't even thought of what his parents are going to do to him. Gosh, they're gonna kill him!

The bell rings and Josh stands mutely, ready to head for the door, before his stupidhead English teacher stops him again,

"And no extracurricular activities until you're of passing grades again."

Josh freezes. He feels his blood run cold. His heart momentarily stops. His ears twitch, unbelieving of what they're hearing.

"What? No!" Josh wails, "I have Green Team, Choir, Homecoming committee, Reading Buddies and Embassadors! I can't just bail on them!"

Mr. Hix chuckles, "I think they'll be fine without you for a bit. They're obviously taking up a lot of your time that should be put into studying. I just want the best for you, Josh."

Josh suppresses another whine, "But homecoming is in a month and we still have so much work to do! They need me!"

Josh's foot shakes in an ache to stomp it childishly and clunk out of the room, but the way that his teacher is already looking at him humorously makes him livid.

"Josh," He sighs, "Get good grades, and then you get to help out with homecoming. Until then, you're dismissed."

Not wanting to prove any further points his teacher may be making in his mind, Josh just silently nods and sulks his way outside the classroom.

Brendon is waiting for him with a buoyant grin that melts away when he see's Josh's state,

"You look like ass, what's wrong?"

Josh sulks his way to his locker, where when he gets there he finally slams his head against it and answers Brendon with a pout.

Brendon snorts when Josh finishes his ramble, "You are failing class and talked back to a teacher? My oh my, the world must be ending!"

Josh is too upset to slap Brendon, so he instead decides to hug him. Stuffing his face in his best friend's neck, he lets a few tears loose,

"Ma's gonna kill me..."

Brendon rubs the boy's back sympathetically, "Nah, she loves ya, stumpy."

He grabs Josh's chin and uses his thumb to dry damp cheeks, "She'll probably be mad, but that's only 'cause she wants what's best for you. I want what's best for you. Failing English isn't what's best for you." Brendon says sternly into the younger boy's teary eyes.

Josh sniffles and steps back, weakly poking Brendon's chest, "You're a senior, you don't have English anymore." He protests weakly.

Brendon laughs, "Yeah, but I still had to do it!"

Josh scuffs, "That's different! I'm doing it now!"

Brendon drapes his arm over Josh's shoulders and yanks him closer as they start to walk the halls,

"Whatever you say, stumpy."

"Stop calling me stumpy!"

"What the fuck did you just say to me!?"

Brendon and Josh's playful banter is put on pause when a very rowdy, very real banter starts at the end of the hall.

A jersey-wearing jock is shoved into a locker. Quickly bouncing back, he answers his attacker through clenched teeth. His hands are shaking but Josh can't tell if it's from fear or anger,

"I asked how prison life treated ya. Did you enjoy taking it up the ass?" The jock sneers.

A punch is thrown nicely at his jaw, and Brendon starts to usher Josh around the corner, away from the fight.

They turn the corner right as Tyler Joseph makes brief eye contact with Josh, before quickly returning his pummelling on the bleeding jock. Josh doesn't think twice before speedwalking away.
