Josh's fork scrapes his plate as he pushes his pasta around.
Family dinner is always awkward. Bill Dun chews robotically, the same stoic expression as always on his face. Laura Dun attempts to make conversation before giving up and pouring herself another glass of wine.
"Stop that." Bill finally snaps, as the screeching of Josh's fork becomes too much.
Josh sets his fork down gently,
"May I be excused?" He asks, not looking at his father.
Bill gulps down some water. "No. Finish your food, don't be selfish."
Josh takes a deep breath through his nose, "I'm not hungry."
Bill stabs a noodle, forcing his fork down on his plate and making a noise himself.
"Finish. Your dinner." He says firmly.
Josh finally looks up and into his fathers eyes,
His eyes squint, "Why, how rude of me. Of course I will, father. My apologies." He says, his voice sickly sweet as he shoves a pile of pasta in his mouth.
Laura looks at him, abhorred. Bill's nostrils flare.
"Are you sassing me?" He asks in a shout.
Josh slams his fist down on the table,
"Maybe I am!" He throws back.
Bill curses, downing the rest of his water. He shakes his head at his son,
"I've about had enough of your attitude." He says through a mouth of noodles.
Josh is about to respond when his father makes a rude noise,
"And would you care to explain the email I got from your teacher about you failing English?"
The blood drains from Josh's face, and he realizes how childish he's acting.
"I... I didn't-"
Laura looks alarmed, "What? I didn't get an email," She says in confusion.
Bill sends Josh an angry but expectant look.
"I just... I didn't want to disappoint you..."
Bill scoffs, a hand rising to rub at his forehead, "Too late." He mutters, and Josh feels his heart break.
"Bill!" Laura scolds.
Bill rolls his eyes at his wife, "We're too lenient with him, Laura. I told you we should have sent him to boarding school."
Laura is astonished, "Lenient? We have him on the tightest leash! He's doing his best!"
"His best isn't good enough!" Bill barks.
Laura stares. Josh sniffles. It's quiet.
"His teacher said he recommended a study group that I am positive Josh hasn't been going to. He's not trying, Laura. He's failing, and isn't even trying to fix his mistakes."
