Homecoming is tomorrow, and school is rowdier than ever.
With spirit week in full swing, Josh has been too busy to even think about missing Tyler.
Sure, sometimes he feels the ghost of the older males warn breath on his neck, strong hands gripping his own... But painting the homecoming sign is much more important than silly daydreams so Josh will be focusing on that from now on.
He carefully paints in red strokes, carpe noctem in beautiful cursive that Josh is very proud of.
Homecoming is in less than 24 hours and there is still so much to be done! There's only two other people helping Josh finish the last touches of the decorations right now, and it's a little bit stressful. But Josh has his headphones in and is listening to calming music to keep him focused on the task at hand.
Josh feels a tap on his shoulder, he slides his headphones off.
"Josh, where do you want these balloons?" Marina asks, the black and red balloons in her hands contrasting wildly against the bright yellow and purple of their school colours she's wearing on every part of her body.
Josh only spares her a glance before turning back to his work. He vaguely waves his hand toward the entrance of the ballroom, "Just— Near the arch should work."
Marina makes an affirmative noise and skips away, her Vans tapping across the floor.
Josh sighs and turns off his music, and then focuses back on his work.
Though, with his mind so relaxed and quiet, it's hard to focus when all that's on your mind is a certain boy.
Josh can't help it. Thoughts of the older boy's scent fill his mind, setting itself right next to the thoughts of Tyler's smile.
Josh curses as he draws a little out of line. In attempt to try and fix it, the r ends up being way fatter than the ca prior to it. But whatever, it's fine. He'll just add glitter, that'll make it better.
"Hey, Josh?" Marina calls once again.
Josh struggles not to groan aloud, "Yes?"
He turns to see Marina standing next to a big pile of not-yet-inflated balloons. She toes her shoe on the ground, a hand coming up to scratch at the tiny heart resting on her cheek,
"I have to get home now," She says.
Josh furrows his eyebrows, "But we still have two hours until—"
The school bell ringing interrupts his sentence. Marina looks at him weirdly,
"It's 3:15, Josh." She says, gesturing to the clock on the wall.
Josh stares at it.
"Anyway..." Marina says nervously, already heading towards the door.
"So sorry I cant stay any longer. But I really have to go. Bye!" She calls, and then slides out the door without another word.
This time Josh really does groan. He plops onto the ground and squeezes his eyes shut.
He's sure Lynn is probably giving him a weird look but he doesn't bother to open his eyes and check.
He's spent almost two hours dilly dallying and he needs to focus, gosh darn it! He puts his headphones back in and lets his mind completely block out everything except for painting this sign.
He's a speedy worker, almost numbly moving around as he paints and blows balloons. Sometime in his trance he vaguely hears Lynn excuse herself but he's in the zone, man. No time for useless farewells.
Before he knows it, it's 6:40 and he's left sitting on the floor surrounded by six large banners covered in wet paint and 145 helium balloons being held down by a chair.
He doesn't remember when he laid down, but he must have rested his cheek on one of the signs as he can feel cold, wet goo staining his skin.
He wants to be bothered to panic about the sign and quickly finish blowing up the last of the balloons and then setting them up and then hanging the signs and then strategically placing tinsel where tinsel would look best and then getting the tables ready and then making sure they're are enough chairs and then doing a shit ton more work...
But his eyes can't seem to stay open.
