Chapter Thirteen I: Unavoidable Situations..

Alessandra

Stiff and unmoving.

That's how he was laying there on that bed, in that plastic shield in the private ward at the ICU with a big white brace draped around his neck, and many different wires connected to his lone form.

The steady 'beep beep beep' was the only reassurance that he was still present in the land of the living. More like he was hanging on for dear life. That's exactly how the doctor had put it. 'Your brother is in a sleep-induced coma'. That was all I needed to hear before I tuned out on her.

I couldn't bring myself to walk up to him, so I just stood there at the doorway with tears clouding my visions and Roxie's grip on my arm the only thing keeping me from completely leaving the land of the living before my beloved, delinquent brother. A blanket of fur lay sprawled at my feet, and the constant 'meow meow' from the majestic feline told me she was trying to offer her comfort in the only way she knew how to.

Leave her claw marks on my new Adidas sneakers.

I laughed.

I laughed hard.

I laughed some more.

And then, I cried.

Roxie just held me in her arms and rubbed circles on my back while I bawled my eyes out of their sockets. A while later, my sobfest reduced to silent convulsive weeping.

An elderly woman in a doctor's overall popped her head into the room and smiled brighter than was necessary for the present occasion.

"Hello there, ladies", she said in that nursey, motherly tone that is famous with all nice and motherly nurses. Not all nurses though, like the one that stabbed me with a needle at age 8, all because of a tetanus injection. I still remember her face vividly; Fernando had said she looked like the 'abominable scarecrow' from the Himalayas.

"Snowman, abominable snowman", I'd corrected him and laughed when he blushed in embarrassment.

"Abominable scarecrow looks more befitting for a monster, don't you think?", he'd asked. And I had to agree with him.

Tears immediately gathered at the distant memory and it took all of my willpower to prevent them from falling.

"H-hello", I stifled.

"I'm Dr. Newlane but you can call me Janie. I'm the doctor in charge of Fernando Montez's case..."

She walked into the room and came over to where we sat cuddled up on the cold white tiles. "My, my. How long have you two being sitting down there?"

Roxie took out her iPhone from one of those one-handed Michael Kors purses she likes to pair up with her clothes. Today, it was chestnut brown.

She gasped loudly. "Can you believe it? I've being sitting here, watching you cry me a river for over 2 hours. No wonder I'm having ass cramps", she stood up and stretched her bones like a labourer who single-handedly built the pyramid of Giza in a day.

"Now, get your butt off the floor before I do it for you!", she commanded, giving me her perfect demonstration of the stink eye. I silently obeyed her and went over to where the real comfy seats were, because even though she looked like the unoriginal version of a psychotic killer, she had psychotic tendencies.

We wouldn't want to annoy her now that we've already got one person in the hospital.. And more bills to settle.. We can't afford to have one more in the hospital and another in prison...
