Chapter Thirty: Unforgettable Reaping..

Alessandra

The D-day.

It feels like deja vu all over again.

Another one of those days.

Another day to survive the masked stares, glares and perhaps, gawking from the large number of people who run the city and the people who aspire to climb up the social ladder.

Another day to be paraded around like a priced artistic commodity at an auction event in the arms of one of the most sought-after bachelors in the country.

Another day for Grace to play dress up with me, her latest mannequin. She seem to know her way around fashion and cosmetics because when David, in his own 'polite' words, had insisted that I hire a professional beautician and stylist, she had seemed insulted and walked out. At first, I thought she had bailed on me, and I would have to go beg for her forgiveness later on, but she surprised me when she showed up a little while later- two and a half hours actually, with three large suitcases and a certificate of training from the best fashion institution in the country.

"We don't look it, doesn't mean we don't own it", she had said and had the guts to stroll into the Arden's mansion as if she owned the place, leaving the, no doubt, heavy suitcases for the staff to drag along.

When she was done with me, a very long while later, my oh my! I stared at my reflection in the mirror for far too longer than was necessary because I couldn't immediately find myself. And no, it wasn't because of the black feathery mask I was supposed to wear.

Grace had me in a black bedazzled halter neck gown that hugged my entire figure to the knees without leaving anything for keepsake. From the knees, it flowed down in a long train that cleaned up behind me while I walked.

Well, it's good to be a resourceful human being, right?..

My hair - she hung up on my head in a fancy and messy bun with a silver hair band, leaving. few strands hanging around to frame my face.

David had purchased the gown himself, according to Grace. He'd had her give him options to choose from and he'd chosen this particular one, saying that I wouldn't look so impoverished in it because this was going to be our first official outing together as an engaged couple. Even though he'd insulted me like he always did, a fluttering sensation had settled at the pit of my stomach when she told me that. If I didn't know any better, I'd have thought David was planning to get me hooked in secret this night.

Oh, you would want that, wouldn't you?

Shut up, mind! I most certainly would not!

I was almost a blushing mess.

I blame John for this sudden change.. Because of the information he filled me with, I'm beginning to see his grandson in another light, more like a human being and less of a monster that he truly is. I don't know if I like this change or not, I really don't want to..

Urgh!

Anyway, David seemed to share my sentiments too or so I thought - you never know with him - because I could have sworn with my life that I saw his eyes grow wider a fraction when I walked down the stairs to meet him earlier.

Damn that mask he had on to hell! It's either I'm now seeing things or he hid it so well.. I'm betting on the latter..

That same fluttering sensation had settled at the pit of my stomach again, as he held out his hand for me to take. He looked stylishly handsome as ever in his dark suit and white shirt. The golden embroidery on his white shirt matched the gold Arden family brooch on his jacket. I was almost, almost proud of myself for being in his arms tonight because more than half the population of women in the room or city were saying a word of prayer in that regard.
